Introducing Realising Education for Development
This is a unique and special opportunity to lead and develop a dynamic, student-led charity and to play a central part in supporting the education of thousands of Tanzanian students, giving young people inspiring volunteering opportunities.
Realising Education for Development is a student-led charity that works to improve access to educational resources in Tanzania. Working with university-student volunteers we set up libraries in secondary schools. We raise funds from corporate partners in Tanzania and trusts in the UK to carry out our library refurbishment, promote reading and purchase books (Library Refurbishment Programme). Our university-student volunteers spend up to 4 weeks running a library refurbishment, which includes painting, minor repairs, referencing books and setting up library rules and a rota for library teachers.
History
Realising Education for Development (known as Realising Education) was legally established in 2015, and took over the programmes previously implemented by READ International. READ International which was set up in 2004 worked to distribute UK textbooks to Tanzanian schools and first piloted the library refurbishment programme. In 2014, READ International made the decision to close operations but supported a Tanzanian Board to set up Realising Education. We maintain a close relationship with READ International.
Board
Our Board is currently in transition and is made up of:
Ketan Shah – Treasurer
Lau Masha
Theophilus Mlaki –Chairman
Faraja Nyalandu
We are in the process of recruiting additional Board members.
Strategy 2014 - 2017
We are currently implementing our 2014-2017 strategy. We will begin to review this strategy in-house this year and will begin a longer strategy review in early 2017.
The Impact
In READ’s ten years of operation and since we established Realising Education, we achieved impressive results and galvanised the goodwill and energies of young people both in the UK and in Tanzania, of supporters from the corporate and grant making worlds, and those in official posts. To-date we have:
- Distributed over 1.4 million books to more than 1,000 Tanzanian secondary schools
- We have refurbished 82 school libraries, which provide access to 50,000 secondary school students in Tanzania, to help maintain reading and literacy
It is important to point out that all of this was made possible by our pool of volunteers.

Realising Education in 2016 and beyond
As we take Realising Education forward we want to build on that immense success, while at the same time focusing on building new programmes and supporting our libraries to thrive.
Our main programmes are:
- Library Refurbishment Programme
- Top-Up Programme
We are also piloting some smaller initiatives that could be scaled up in the future.
In 2015, we:
- Refurbished and created 12 new libraries
- Carried out a top-up at 3 libraries originally refurbished in 2009 and 2010
- Implemented our reading programme at 2 secondary schools in Dar-es-Salaam
- Piloted a training programme for library teachers on reading promotion at 5 schools (in partnership with BookAid International)
- Were funded by 5 corporates, 3 Tanzanian charities and 3 UK Charities
- Moved towards a model of purchasing locally published books
In 2016, we aim to:
- Create and refurbish school libraries in secondary schools across Tanzania. We plan to refurbish and create 15 new libraries
- Continue to develop and solidify our corporate partnerships
- Develop a training programme to support textbook use by teachers for classroom instruction
- Develop and pilot new programmes
- Measure the impact of our work. We will continue to strengthen our monitoring framework and data collection process which allows us to talk confidently about what we do and the difference it is making.
- Continue to work with Tanzanian volunteers and build their capacity. We should extend our support beyond the lifespan of their involvement in the library refurbishment with corporate mentoring opportunities.
- Develop relationships with corporates to sponsor the work that we do.
