GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:


Project Concern International (PCI), in partnership with Bunda, Butiama and Musoma District Councils, is implementing a field trial of Novel Sorghum Based Fortified Blended Foods for Infants and Young Children in the Mara region, led by Kansas State University (KSU) and funded by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) McGovern Dole Program under the Micronutrient Fortified Food Aid Pilot Program (MFFAPP). The study aims to determine the nutritional efficacy and consumer acceptance of new fortified-blended food products in children under five in Bunda District over a five-month period (February – July, 2016).
 
The MFFAPP Manager is responsible for managing the field trial activities at the community and district level through an integrated approach and focused on achieving the research objectives. S/he will take a lead role in the planning, training, screening, product distribution, monitoring and reporting activities.  S/he is expected to maintain effective working relationships with other PCI staff working on the project, key government partners, beneficiaries and health facilities under the MFFAPP. The MFFAPP Manager will receive support from the Health Coordinator especially in the orientation period and start-up period.

OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION:

Oversee the development of tools to create awareness among the communities through participatory and community-centered approaches in order to recruit study participants and maintain high levels of support and understanding of the project in the community. To manage and coordinate the implementation of the research study activities at the health facility and community level; to design and implement training, monitoring and research activities; facilitate collective problem solving; promote quality assurance; strengthen linkages and information exchange between program staff, stakeholders and study participants. To represent the MFFAPP program in key stakeholder meetings and to ensure ongoing collaboration and transparency with the district.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


Education:
·         Master degree or equivalent, MD, Master of Public Health/Nutrition/social sciences or other related field, RN, or RD desirable. Experience in research.

Experience:
  • 5 years’ experience in managing or coordinating community health research studies, particularly nutrition studies  
  • Technical ability in designing or adapting public health and nutrition related research and skills in training facilitation, training of trainers, monitoring field trial compliance to data collection protocols, and ensuring the integrity of the data.
  •  Demonstrated experience interacting with government officials and community-based stakeholders; Excellent project management skills; Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); Working knowledge of monitoring and evaluation procedures and processes.
  • Excellent English skills (verbal and written);
 
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
 
  1. To coordinate implementation of activities in the preparation for and implementation of the field trial
  2. Advise and provide updates to researchers from KSU on methods and procedures used for recruitment, screening, community sensitization, trainings, monitoring, and data collection for the field trial
  3. Coordinate the execution of activities and sub-activities according to detailed implementation plan, in coordination with other program units and staff, and within budget parameters
  4. Monitor and ensure staff compliance to study protocols
  5. Monitor implementation, oversee data collection, analyze relevant data to inform strategy, approach and implementation
  6. Provide ongoing technical support and supportive supervision
  7. Reporting and documentation
  8. Maintain current technical knowledge and best practices
  9. Manage relationships and represent PCI with key external stakeholders within technical area
