Background
One of the new concerns within the development circles is the burgeoning youth population across the developing countries. Young people make up 18% of the world's population; Africa has the youngest population in the world, with almost 200 million people aged 15 to 24. Between 2000 and 2008, Africa's working age population (15-64 years) grew from 443 million to 550 million; an increase of 25%. If this trend continues, the continent's labour force will be 1 billion strong by 2040, making it the largest in the world, surpassing both China and India (McKinsey Global Institute, 2010). But this growing labour force is not matched by increasing job opportunities, mainly because the economies of these countries creating far less job opportunities than the number of young people joining the labour force. In developing countries, the challenges are not only creating jobs, but also finding decent jobs for the young people who are under-employed or in the informal economy. There are other diverse issues that hinder progress for the youth, this range from education, health, and socio inclusion amongst others. Un/Under-employment of young people and resultant poverty leads to frustrations that can predispose young people to other social problems. Dissatisfied youth are often more likely than older generations to challenge their situation actively and become a socially destabilizing force as evidenced by increasing demands for change in North Africa and the Middle East.
SNV therefore seeks to address the challenges affecting youth with respect to employment opportunities by transforming sector opportunities into attractive and profitable ventures for young people.
