The volunteer's role
In collaboration with RHMT, CHMT and Hospital Management will take the lead in the design of all specialist Obstetrician/Gynaecological medical services at Kigoma Maweni Regional Referral hospital and strengthen services at district/local level health facilities.
Objectives:
- Improving services and patient management, for example organisation of the delivery ward.
- To ensure there is a link and good communication between Obstetrics and Gynaecology department and the newborn department (Neonatal Intensive Care Units)
- Improving infection control in the wards.
The volunteer will:
- Train and coach Doctors, Nurses and Clinician on Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Care and Basic Emergency Obstetric Care as well as intake patient histories, examination, diagnosis and treatment.
- Training in surgical interventions and abnormalities of labour, abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy, induced labour, abnormal and caesarean delivery, breech presentation, forceps delivery, & twins delivery.
- Undertake more complex, specialist operations for the purpose of other health workers' learning.
- Supporting doctors in prescribing medication and advising on the implications of incorrect drug management
- Visit District hospitals, community health centers and dispensaries in the region and offer training to Nurses, Midwives and Nurse Assistants.
Essential Academic Qualifications:
- Qualified medical professional (MD specialized in Obstetrics/Gynecology)
Essential Professional Background/Competencies:
- Qualified Obstetrician/Gynecologist with at least 2 years’ experience in the field
Desirable Professional Background/Competencies:
- Some knowledge of tropical medicine and experience in working in developing countries.
- Experience at management level is an asset

Cuso International covers the majority of the $29,000 cost of being an overseas volunteer, including:

Fundraising: We ask each volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.
• E-volunteering: Depending on the nature of the placement, the volunteer might be required to provide e-volunteering support to the local partner or Cuso International before or after the field placement.
