OPPORTUNITY FOR PhD/POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH (DEOH) MUHIMBILI UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES
Thanks to financial support from the Norad of Norway, the School of Public Health and Social Sciences (SPHSS) at MUHAS started a collaborative project titled “Reduction of the burden of injuries and diseases due to occupational exposures through capacity building in low income countries” in 2013. It is a joint initiative being driven by the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at MUHAS and the Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia.
Through the project, we seek to appoint, as soon as possible, two young PhD holders as Postdoctoral Research Fellows for a period of up to 3 years to undertake guided research under the mentorship of a panel of Tanzanian and Norwegian specialists. Their primary research focus will be on the following two objectives, but they will be expected to contribute to other project objectives:
- To assess the transfer of food borne pathogens from cattle to humans among pastoralists in Tanzania (1 Post doc in Tanzania)
- To characterize exposures, occupational related diseases and injuries in Tanzanian horticulture (1 Post doc in Tanzania)
The successful candidate is expected to have the following profile:
- Be a member/prospective member of MUHAS/AAU academic staff
- Be a PhD holder for less than 3 years
- The candidate should have an interest in teaching and mentoring students
- Should produce a proposal outlining the area of interest
- They will be expected to supervise master students with help in this project period and afterwards they will perform supervision and teaching of master students on their own
- Should have interest in the relationship between health, environment and social life.
- Should be fluent in both English and Kiswahili
- Should have a good track record of publications
- Would be required to publish in high impact journals, as well as publish or contribute to publications for the non-specialist audience/readership
- Would be required to travel extensively within the country, attend scientific meetings, and workshops within and outside the country
This postdoctoral research fellowship will be registered at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences under the primary leadership of Dr. Simon Mamuya Secondary mentorship will be by Associate Professor Wakgari Deressa, Dean of School of Public Health, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia Email: deressaw@yahoo.com; deressaw@gmail.com and Professors Bente Moen Email: bente.moen@isf.uib.no of the University of Bergen (UiB).
The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with local and national authorities in the public, health and agricultural sectors as well as in those in the community development sectors. They will also be expected to collaborate closely with other DEOH sponsored research apprentices and to play an active part in the activities of DEOH.
