INVITATION TO APPLY FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE MWALIMU JULIUS
NYERERE PROFESSORIAL CHAIR IN DEVELOPMENT
1. The tenure of office of the inaugural Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Professor in Development, Prof. D.G. Rwegasira comes to an end on 22nd April 2014. Applications are therefore invited from internationally distinguished scholars to fill the position.
2. AIMS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE CHAIR
The Mwalimu Nyerere Chair for Development aims at spearheading basic and applied research in Social Development from the economic perspective. The research would inform ongoing development debate and dialogue at the University, from both national and international perspectives and assist in formulating options and strategies for addressing emerging national global economic challenges.
The Mwalimu Nyerere Professor for Development shall provide academic guidance and leadership to the Chair in fulfilling the following objectives:
• To spearhead basic and applied research in social development from the economic perspective, motivated by the quest for accelerated economic growth and rapid reduction of poverty.
• To analyse the developments, constraints, and opportunities in the increasingly globalised world economy with a view to shaping development options and strategies, bearing in mind the growing role of emerging market countries and the expressed desire for greater cooperation by the countries of the South.
• To reinvigorate the University as a site of rigorous intellectual reflection and continuing development dialogue through publications, seminars, conferences and polity discourses.
• To encourage and mentor young researchers and postgraduate students in basic and applied research, as well as participating in shaping the contents of advanced economic development and related courses.
3. KEY ATTRIBUTES
The Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Professor in Development should be an internationally distinguished scholar and researcher in the area of economic development or a very closely related field who holds an academic rank equivalent to that of a full professor of the University of Dar es Salaam.
4. MODE OF APPLICATION
Applicants should submit two copies of their application letters, curriculum vitae, full publication record and certificates and a set of two of their recently published journal articles not later than 30th April, 2014.
