The Shanti Uganda Society is seeking an energetic, committed, and passionate Project Coordinator to lead Shanti Uganda’s programs and activities on the ground in Uganda under the direction of the Executive Director.
Shanti Uganda is a Canadian Charity and Ugandan NGO that improves infant and maternal health, provides safe mother-centered care and supports the well being of birthing mothers and women living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Shanti Uganda is a grassroots organization committed to sustainable community based development, holistic birth and the yogic principles of selfless service.
The Shanti Uganda Birth House is a solar powered maternity center on one acre of land in the Luweero District of Uganda. The Birth House provides mother-centered care throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period and is staffed by our team of Ugandan Midwives, Traditional Birth Attendant and Lab Technician. From the Birth House, Shanti Uganda runs prenatal education classes, a Community Garden Program, a Teen Girls Program and a Women’s Income Generating Group – a collective of HIV positive women who produce bags and jewellery which are sold throughout North America.

You enjoy preparing and communicating presentations for small to medium sized audiences of prospective donors and supporters. Similarly you feel equally at ease facilitating group meetings and workshops with local beneficiaries.
Your Responsibilities
• Report to the Executive Director weekly
• Collaborate with the Executive Director, Interns, Head Midwife, Stakeholders, and Advisory Committee to ensure continuous developmental improvements in all project areas and angles
• Prepare quarterly reports, gather and log monthly statistics, and update program materials
• Complete bi-annual staff evaluations
• Pay staff, handle any major staff grievances, and ensure staff retention and overall staff satisfaction
• With the head midwife, hire and fire staff
• Support the head midwife in the overall management of the Birth Centre
• Respond to intern/volunteer email inquiries
• Coordinate internship placements and manage a small group of interns/volunteers
• Write grant applications, sponsorship proposals, and requisition letters
• Source out new local partnerships, meet with potential sponsors and maintain existing donor relations in Uganda
• Sustain Shanti Uganda’s strong relationship with the local community and District officials
• Blog and update social media pages
• Facilitate stakeholders’ meetings, as well as Staff and Interns’ meetings
• Represent Shanti Uganda at District meetings and events
• Coordinate the overall planning of Shanti Uganda special events and Shanti Uganda’s participation in District activities
• Manage the local bank account, balance monthly expenses, and control overall project budget
• Travel to the capital as needed to meet with the lawyer, insurance, NGO board, and development partners
Your Qualifications and Experience
• Degree in International Development, Project Management or demonstrated interest and related experience
• Strong leadership and negotiation skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Resourceful, professional, and dependable with proven ability to work well under limited supervision
• An interest in the evaluation and measurement of progress in programs relating to health and development
• Demonstrated interest in women's health, human rights, community development and/or social justice
• Demonstrated intercultural effectiveness skills and ability to manage a team of up to 20 local and international staff and volunteers
• Open-minded, flexible, and patient
• Possess excellent inter-personal and networking skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and online social media tools (twitter, facebook, pinterest)
• Must have experience living/working in the Global South
• Experience drafting grant proposals, communication and other written promotional material
• Relevant experience in fundraising and event planning (preferably in the not-for-profit sector) - an asset
• Knowledge of and passion for the midwifery model of care, yoga and holistic health - an asset
Working Conditions This is a full time position starting December 15th 2012, with orientation to begin November 15th 2012 in Uganda. The workweek is 40hrs per week including occasional evening and weekend work. One round trip ticket will be provided to the Project Coordinator. The Project Coordinator will be provided with their own private furnished bedroom and office within the Shanti Uganda Volunteer House compound. The Shanti Volunteer House accommodates interns/volunteers from North America and around the world and contains a furnished kitchen, living room and bathroom. The orientation period will be from November 15th 2012 to December 15th 2012 in Uganda and be provided by the outgoing Project Coordinator who is currently living there. During this period, the new applicant will work a 30-hour workweek with a pay of $600/month. The new Project Coordinator’s contract will run from December 15th 2012 to December 15th 2013 with a salary of $1000/month.
