CHF is seeking an Education Specialist for a proposed 4-year, $10 million Department of Labor-funded project to combat child labor in Tanzania. This project will reduce child labor in Tanzania through an area-based approach in geographic areas where there is a prevalence of child labor in agriculture production and domestic service. It will work with local entities and build on existing efforts to reduce the worst forms of child labor, including programs to protect orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), increase access to education and promote economic opportunities for Tanzanian households most vulnerable to the worst forms of child labor.
The Education Specialist will be responsible for activities designed to promote children’s access to, enrollment and completion of education and training opportunities as a means of reducing child labor. Strategies will include initial assessment of factors affecting children’s ability to access education-related services; supporting the provision of healthy learning environments for children, including steps to ensure that goods, services, schools, and other learning environments provided by, used by or sponsored by the project are safe and do not pose a threat to the well-being of project beneficiaries; and improving the quality and relevance of education for target children.
Qualifications: •3+ years of international development project experience in a leadership position responsible for developing education interventions and technical aspects related to the proposed strategy, including student assessment, teacher training, educational materials/curriculum development, educational management, and education monitoring and information systems •Significant technical experience in basic and secondary education projects •Understanding of child labor issues, including special educational needs of children removed from child labor when they enter/return to school •Experience working with vulnerable children and their households, preferably in Tanzania and/or East Africa •Experience working successfully with Ministries of Education and other government agencies, networks of educators, employers’ organizations, trade unions or comparable entities •Fluency in written and spoken English required •Second language experience preferred; knowledge of local languages preferred but not required
