Bilingual Science Communicator , Mexico City

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT for its Spanish acronym) is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated, and service-orientated professional for the position of Bilingual Science Communicator. The position will be based at CIMMYT’s headquarters located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, but will interact with many of CIMMYT´s experimental stations on a regular basis. The successful candidate will work in the Seeds of Discovery (SeeD) project, one of the four components of the Sustainable Modernization of Traditional Agriculture program (MasAgro for its Spanish acronym). The MasAgro program is coordinated by CIMMYT with the support and financing of the Mexican Government. Its purpose is to sustainably increase yields of maize and wheat production systems in Mexico through the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices and the use of enhanced scientific tools for genetic improvement.

The primary objective of this position is to disseminate to the global agricultural R&D community research strategies, methods, results, tools, services, training opportunities, and impacts arising from the SeeD project.

Specific responsibilities of this position will include:

• Propose, plan and implement programs and activities aimed at disseminating research strategies, methods, results, tools, services, and project impacts.
• Work in close collaboration with the project leader, scientists, and technical staff to prepare printed and digitally published materials.
• Maintain the content of the project website and portal up to date.
• Assist project members in the preparation of publications for scientific and non-scientific audiences.
• Undertake research to evaluate the visibility of the project amongst members of the research community working on the conservation, use, exploitation, and improvement of maize and wheat genetic resources.
• Prepare and conduct presentations about the project’s strategy, results and impact.
• Other duties as directed by the supervisor.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualification, skills and attitudes:

• BA/BS or postgraduate studies in agricultural or scientific communication, agronomy with focus on areas related to communications, journalism, or a related field.
• Relevant experience and skills in areas related to scientific communication, preferably in agriculture and/or genetics.
• Experience in the administration of websites or web portals.
• Excellent bilingual skills (English/Spanish).
• Excellent ability to draft technical notes and articles in English and Spanish.
• Ability to work in a highly organized and results-oriented fashion in a multicultural team, often under time pressure.
• In case of non-Mexican applicants, a valid work/residence permit is required.
