The East African Community is a regional intergovernmental organisation comprising the Republic of Burundi, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda with its Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The EAC mission is to widen and deepen economic, political, social and cultural integration to improve the quality of life of the people of East Africa through increased competitiveness, value added production, trade and investments.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and result-driven professional who is a citizen of East African Community Partner States (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) to apply for the following position tenable at East African Community - Secretariat:
Organ / Institution: The Secretariat
Duty Station: Arusha, Tanzania
Job Grade: P3
Job reports to: Director, Productive Sectors

Job Purpose:

To facilitate the harmonization of policies and strategies and the implementation of projects and programmes related to Agriculture and Food Security.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct agricultural policy analysis research and training to improve efficiency of the   various policies proposed for the Sector;
  2. Establish mechanism to harmonise safeguard measures for monitoring sensitive agricultural products;
  3. Promote production of food crops in areas that have comparative advantage for food security of Partner States;
  4. Support efforts that promote collaboration in research activities for seed production;
  5. Develop plans to operationalize trade liberation in agricultural products;
  6. Co-ordinate the harmonisation and adoption of a common Agricultural Policy that will focus on food self sufficiently in the Community;
  7. Initiate studies on how to strengthen the East African early warning system;
  8. Promote irrigation initiatives aimed at managing risk and reducing vulnerability; and
  9. Prepare progress and annual reports.

Qualifications and Experience:

A Masters degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Policy and Research, Development Economics, Economic Policy and Planning or an equivalent degree from a recognised University/Institution.
10 years relevant experience, with 5 years at Senior level.

Education Qualifications and Relevant Working Experience:

Education Qualifications:
All candidates applying must have qualifications that are recognized by the relevant national accreditation body in their respective Partner State. This condition is applicable for locally and internationally attained qualifications.
All professions that require registration with the specific professional bodies will be expected to do so in compliance with the requirements of their respective Partner States.
Relevant Work Experience:
Internship, training and apprenticeship will not be considered as relevant work experience.

Eligibility:

Applicants from all five (5) Partner States are eligible to apply for this position.

Terms and Conditions of Service:

The above position is tenable for a contract of five (5) years renewable once and is subject to the application of the EAC Quota System.
