About us:
Founded in 1958, the Aussätzigen-Hilfswerk Österreich (Austrian Leprosy Relief Association, ALRA) works towards elimination of leprosy as part of the struggle to overcome neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and as part of joint efforts to strengthen health systems and to end poverty. Our goal: We strive for inclusion of those affected by ostracizing diseases of poverty. We seek to overcome charity, following a rights-based (and sustainable) approach to health sector development. Building on the successes of anti-leprosy work, we focus on capacity development. We are committed to primary health care (PHC) and the Alma Ata Declaration. We seek to overcome charity by realizing solidarity. Amongst others, ALRA is a member of:
ILEP: The International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations coordinates the collaboration of its members in order to overcome leprosy around the world. Resources are pooled, relief programs receive reciprocal support, experience is exchanged, and contacts and common strategies are synchronized with national programs.
KOO: Koordinierungsstelle der Österreichischen Bischofskonferenz (Coordination Office of the Austrian Bishops Conference). The Coordination Office promotes and coordinates the commitment of the Austrian Catholic Church to development and is aimed at raising awareness and creating a sense of solidarity amongst people in Austria.
