PRIVATE FORESTRY PROGRAMME
Position: District Forest Extension Officer
Duty station (s): Rural areas in one of the districts in which the Private Forestry Programme operates.
The Private Forestry Programme (PFP) aims at increasing rural income in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania through developing sustainable and profitable forestry and value addition in the entire production value chain from quality seeds to quality products in the markets. The programme is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism of Tanzania. PFP is implemented by a consortium formed by lndufor Oy and Niras Finland.
The Programme operates in selected districts in Iringa, Njombe, Morogoro and Ruvuma regions. Key implementing entities and partners of the Programme include the Ministry of Natural Resource and Tourism, the Tanzania Forest Services, District Councils of the area, training and research organizations, and Tree Growers' Associations (TGA).
PFP started its operations in January 2014 and is now looking for a competent younger generation District Forest Extension Officer to become a new team member of the existing nine Extension Officers.
Qualifications and experience:
A Diploma or SSc in Forestry. Experience in developing and conducting forestry training to smallholder farmers in the field. Hands on experience in participatory community based plantation forestry activities. Good problem/conflict solving skills. Ability to work with other stakeholders, including district authorities, private companies and NGOs. Excellent oral and written communication skills both in English and Swahili.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
i. To create awareness and train tree growers in Programme target villages;
ii. To create awareness in target villages on the need for participatory land use planning and participate in the formulation of the plans;
iii.To conduct training on intensive management of commercial tree plantations (tree seedling production, land preparation, planting, weeding, pruning, thinning, and forest protection);
iv.To disseminate forest management best practices to tree growers;
v. To monitor tree plantation progress and produce field reports;
vi.To coordinate identification and implementation of income generating activities within the target villages;
vii.To participate in the production and distribution of extension materials to tree growers and other stakeholders in the district;
Duration: Initially 2 years with a possibility of extension with proven performance.
The applicants must be ready to stay in villages and small townships. Women are highly encouraged to apply.
