The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a member of a world-wide network of International Agricultural Research Centers. IITA's research focuses on smallholder cropping systems in sub-Saharan Africa. IITA has a regional hub in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania which co-ordinates the work of the institute in East Africa.
To support this work, IITA is looking for a Laboratory Technician. This position is required to support the banana project that will be based at the IITA Office at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NMAIST) in Kijenge, Arusha.
Responsibilities
The Laboratory Technician will perform the following duties among others:
Sampling in preparation for DNA extraction
Prepare buffers
DNA extraction, qualification and quantification in preparation to genotyping by sequencing
Analyse ploidy level for banana hybrids
Maintain excellent lab records
Report findings orally and in writing
Be responsible for the maintenance of lab equipment
Keep track of the use of the lab consumables and supplies
Assist the field supervisor in running the phenotyping experiments and collecting the phenotypic data
Other official duties as assigned by the Postdoc/Molecular banana breeder
Required Qualifications / Experience
The candidate should have a BSc in Molecular Biology I Biotechnology I Agriculture or related field.
Preferably work experience in agricultural sciences or other research environment
Familiarity with general laboratory working procedures
Flexibility, reliability, honesty and independence
Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili
Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
The ability to work independently and as a team member;

The initial contract for the position is for two years: renewable subject to performance and availability of funds. The duty station for the position will be IITA- in Arusha at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science & Technology (NMAIST) in Kijenge. This is a nationally recruited position and IITA offers a competitive remuneration package.
