Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the African Climate Policy Center (ACPC), at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Co-ordinator, African Climate Policy Center in the Special Initiatives Division.
Responsibilities
- Supports strategies that contribute to the development of affordable, clean and efficient energy systems in the member States through participation in the implementation of needs assessment within member States and developing specific proposals to be implemented based on the needs assessment.
- Work under the supervision of the senior energy specialist on the interface between climate change and energy.
- Support ACPC work in identifying, supporting and contributing to effective mainstreaming of renewable and low-carbon energy development into national energy policies and plans, with a view to promoting energy security in member States.
- Participate in analytical research related to energy poverty, infrastructure and climate change with a view to generate in-depth knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts, approaches and practices relevant to policy analysis as they relate to energy resources development and management. Contribute to collecting, analyzing, synthesizing, packaging and disseminating data and information on climate change and energy resources for effective utilization by end-users.
- Work closely with the senior energy and climate change specialist under the overall supervision of the ACPC co-ordinator in contributing to effective dissemination, awareness raising, advocacy and regional integration in infrastructure, energy and climate change by assisting member States, RECs and other regional organizations in building consensus and articulating common positions and strategies on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
- Support and participate in capacity development of member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and energy Network in Africa by delivering training and capacity-building programmes for planners, policy makers and other stakeholders in climate change adaptation and mitigation in the energy sector.
- Work effectively with other ACPC specialists and staff of ECA to assess the interactions between climate change/energy resources vis-à-vis other sectors in order to mitigate negative impacts on key development sectors..
