The George Mason University, School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs (SPGIA) seeks its first Dean. The new school is the result of a merger of two units, the former School of Public Policy and the Department of Public and International Affairs. Located in the national capital region, SPGIA is one of the largest schools of its type in the nation. The school features strengths in a range of academic disciplines, together with multidisciplinary and professional capabilities in research and teaching. SPGIA has over 80 full-time faculty, 730 undergraduate majors, 1,100 master’s, and 200 Ph.D. students; and operates from Mason campuses in Arlington and Fairfax, Va.
The school’s wide range of programs addresses both an academic audience and the varied needs of national and global professionals. Graduate and undergraduate programs include a diversity of subjects such as Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations. Responsibilities of the Dean:
SPGIA seeks a Dean who will lead and continue to build a top-rate institution. Reporting to the Provost, the incumbent oversees the academic standards, fiscal management, and overall development of the school. Responsibilities include working closely with the faculty in setting the academic agenda, and participating in faculty governance. Serving as the school’s external leader, the Dean will represent SPGIA within the university as well as with the wider academic, business and policy communities. This external engagement includes directing the generation of outside resources such as sponsored research funding, philanthropic support, and major gifts. The Dean will also foster a diversity of research activities, and will provide visionary and effective leadership in the development of the school.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have academic credibility, a commitment to the highest standards of learning and teaching, and a strong respect for the principles of faculty governance. Preferred qualifications include senior-level experience in the policy world, academia, or private sector; as well as a record of fundraising, budget management, managing a complex organization, and attracting new resources. SPGIA seeks candidates of national/international stature with integrity and impeccable ethics. A terminal degree is preferred. Specific qualifications include:
