Assistant Legal Counsel
Context/Scope:
Serengeti Breweries Ltd (SBL) operates exclusively in Tanzania and is the 2nd largest beer company with a market share of close to 30%. SBL is a subsidiary of East Africa Breweries Ltd (EABL) – which is partly owned by one of the world’s biggest alcoholic beverage companies, DIAGEO. The company is an integrated demand/supply business with 3 operational breweries in Dar Es Salaam, Mwanza, and Moshi. The company boasts famous locally brewed brands, such as Serengeti Premium Lager, Tusker Lager, Tusker Light, Kibo Gold, Pilsner Lager, Senator just to name a few. The spirits folder is filled with world-class brands from abroad – including Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Baileys, J&B and Gordon’s.
This role provides legal support in relation to SBL’s business in Tanzania. In particular this role will be responsible for day to day pro-active management and tracking of litigation, drafting distribution contracts, reviewing procurement contracts, and reviewing and approving marketing documentation.
The role will link into the Diageo legal function to ensure to access best practice including Diageo legal function activities/meetings and initiatives.

• Preserve value (financial and reputational) by minimising the risk of value leakage and litigation and maintaining compliance with laws and SBL and Diageo Codes.
• Ensure that the line manager and SBL leadership team receive high quality support to achieve jointly agreed objectives.

• Function as a highly effective legal and business partner. Stay particularly close to and lead the provision of legal advice and support required by the SBL marketing and procurement teams.
• Ensure that the line manager has full visibility of all issues and is able to service the legal needs effectively.
• Ensure that litigation cases are proactively managed in order to reduce SBL’s exposure and that external counsel are used in a cost effective way to optimise performance.
• Ensure that there is an effective process to ensure adequate review and approval of marketing and related materials.
• Support procurement team to ensure that templates and precedents are consistent with best practice, fully up to date and in use by the procurement team, including assisting with and reviewing draft agreements.
• Support SBL sales team to ensure that templates and precedents are consistent with best practice, fully up to date and in use by the team, including assisting with and reviewing draft agreements with distributor and retailers.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
• Function as a highly effective legal and business partner. Stay particularly close to and lead the provision of legal advice and support required by the SBL marketing and procurement teams.

• Strong inter-personal/communication skills.
• Ability to work confidently and stand ground with more senior managers.
• Strong commercial and pragmatic approach.
• Ability to work with line manager and others as a team.
• At least 2 years post qualification experience as a Tanzanian advocate.
