The 2014-2015 Australia Awards for Africans is now open for applications. The Australian government’s objective for the Awards is to provide high-quality education and training to talented Africans who will be in a position, on their return home, to make an important contribution to national or regional development. Award categories include short courses fellowship and two-year master’s scholarships for African students.
Eligibility
- To be considered for a Masters-level Award, applicants need to hold an undergraduate degree and be employed in a field relevant to their country’s national development priorities. The applicant’s employer must endorse the application
- In most eligible countries, Awards are available to applicants from the public sector, civil society organisations and the private sector
- Strong applicants whose English language ability is not of the level required to succeed in academic study in Australia may be entitled to English language training before leaving for Australia to take up an Award

Award Types
Australia Awards Scholarships: These scholarships for Masters studies in Australia offered to eligible African candidates for postgraduate studies commencing in 2014.
- Focus sectors for Masters Awards reflect areas which have been identified as priorities by partner governments and in which Australia is recognised as having world-leading expertise and experience. Current priority sectors include: Agriculture and Food Security; Health; Natural Resource Management including Mining and Mining Governance; Public Policy; and Water and Sanitation.
Fellowships
- Two types of Fellowships are available. The first one, Africa Fellowships, offers opportunities for short post-graduate training delivered in Australia and/or in Africa for up to three months.
- The training targets experienced employees from African public, private and non-government organisations (civil society) in the following fields: Agriculture; Health; Mining; Public Policy, including International Diplomacy, Organisational Development, Trade, and Public-Private Partnerships.
- The second type, Australia Awards Fellowships, are managed from Canberra, Australia. They aim to develop leadership, address priority regional development issues, and build partnerships and linkages between Australian organisations and partner organisations in developing countries, including countries in Africa. Note that applications are accepted from Australian organisations only; individuals are not eligible to apply.
Worth of Awards
- For holders of an Australia Awards Scholarship, entitlements include the full costs of tuition fees for up to two years for a Masters award. An economy class flight to and from Australia is provided and an AUD31,000 per annum stipend to cover living expenses whilst on award in Australia. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is also provided to cover Awardee’s basic medical costs.
- A one off Establishment Allowance of AUD5,000 is payable to assist with the costs of starting life in Australia and commencing your course (e.g. course books and materials, rental deposits, household items etc.).
- Awardees, whose families remain in their home country, may be entitled to a reunion airfare to allow them to travel home midway through the course, but this is only available to Awardees whose course is for 2 years or longer.
