The US Embassy is seeking an individual for the position of Visa Assistant at the Consular Section.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
Job holder coordinates all aspects of the nonimmigrant visa (NIV) process at post, resulting in the issuance of over 7,000 visas annually.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
| Serves as point-of-contact/liaison with GSS/CSC, regarding fee payment collection payment collection and appointment scheduling issues. | 5% |
| Answers case-specific inquiries by phone, in person, and in writing, providing detailed information regarding nonimmigrant visa application procedures and U.S. immigration policy. | 15% |
| Greets an average of 70 applicants per day, explains procedures and screens applications for completeness. Reviews applicants' supporting documents. Flags unusual responses and fraud indicators for review by an officer. | 20% |
| Loads applicant data into the NIV system, verifying accuracy of required data fields for each applicant. Double-checks applicant's selection of the correct visa category according to the purpose of travel. | 15% |
| Conducts a preliminary investigation of any irregularities and report's findings to interviewing officer. | 5% |
| Maintains and accounts for controlled consular items (visa foils and fees) on a daily basis. | 15% |
| Prints NIVs and distributes to applicants. | 10% |
| Serves as back-up for immigrant visas and American citizen services. | 15% |
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.

Education: Completion of secondary school (Form VI) with a two year diploma in administration or from a secretarial college.

Prior experience: Three years work experience in an office focused on procedural, regulatory, and/or administrative work.

Language proficiency: Level IV (fluent) (writing, reading and speaking) in both spoken and written English and Kiswahili is required.

Knowledge: Required to have detailed knowledge of all aspects of U.S. immigration law pertaining to nonimmigrant visas. Must be thoroughly familiar with all categories of nonimmigrant visas (NIVs) and ineligibilities. Must be able to identify common and unusual fraud indicators. Knowledge of U.S. immigration policies and procedures must be sufficient to grasp the most complex visa cases and make recommendations to colleagues.

Skills and Abilities: Must be highly computer literate. Must be able to operate Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Access, and be able to use specialized consular software applications. Must have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to handle the constant demand for visas and related consular services.
SELECTION PROCESS
When fully qualified, US Citizen Eligible Family Members (USEFMs) and US Veterans are given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate specifically address the required qualifications above in the application.
