Rio Tinto has recently acquired control of Riversdale in Mozambique to form Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique (RTCM). RTCM currently has 2 projects, the Benga project, which is set to produce first coal in 2012, and the Zambeze project, which is at feasibility stage.
The Superintendent Site Geology and Coal Quality is responsible for coordinating Geological services within the Technical Services function, specifically to ensure geological and geotechnical prediction and control, and coal quality estimation and control.
Key Accountabilities:
- Understand and comply with all relevant legislative and Rio Tinto HSE requirements.
- Ensure that all work performed by Geology and Coal Quality team is undertaken in compliance with Rio Tinto Safety standards.
- Ensure safety talks are held with team and that actions resulting from these talks are followed up and reported back.
- Develop and maintain mine design plans, reserve and structure modeling, and production schedule to enable maximum recovery of the coal resource in a manner that maximizes the safety, productivity and cost effectiveness of the business.
- Ensure in-pit drilling, channel sampling, strip reconciliations and testing activities are performed as scheduled to the standards required.
- Produce accurate short and medium term production and stockpile schedules using agreed production performance parameters and sales schedules
- Monitor and report coal losses and pit adjustments by checking coal movement quantities.
- Investigate and analyse technical advancements and industry achievements in the geological field, and if appropriate, implement improvements with the current systems.
- Make recommendations to achieve optimum recover and extraction outcomes whilst ensuring that safety procedures are being adhered to at all times.
- Liaise with Mine Planning team to provide geological information and interpretations for mine planning tasks within required timeframes.
- Coordinate the work of Technicians to ensure core cutting and sampling activities are completed in a safe and accurate manner.
- Ensure all databases are maintained and updated regularly.
- Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely geological and other technical documentation as required to support operations.
- Manage, coordinate and integrate the output of the team on a day-to-day basis to ensure that the various components of the geological function are carried out effectively.
- Drive a culture of collaboration and improvement to ensure effective participation in and contribution to the Riversdale Operations.
- Follow and encourage team to participate fully in all people systems that encourage the development of an environment in which employees contribute willingly to company goals to the best of their ability.
Your experience and skills should include:
- A Degree in a relevant geological discipline, (post graduate qualifications will be advantageous).
- Extensive knowledge and at least 5 years experience in a similar leadership role in an open cut mining environment - Coking Coal experience is preferred.
- Exposure to and experience in other technical services such as mine planning and surveying would be highly advantageous.
- Proven track record in quickly establishing credibility across a wide range of stakeholders and engaging others to ensure the implementation of effective solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in operating and contributing to a team environment, in particular sharing workloads and supporting colleagues in a positive manner.
- High-level interpretive skills for all forms of geological data such as mapping, drill core and assay data.
- Advanced computer skills with a sound practical understanding of relevant geological and mine planning software.
- In-depth knowledge of geological analysis techniques relevant to coal mining processes and current best practices.
- Well-developed technical, analytical and judgment skills for solving complex problems and evaluating alternate courses of action.
- High-level communication, facilitation and negotiation skills and demonstrated success at building relationships with key people.
