The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks a scientist to fill the position of Irrigation System Management Specialist. If you have a Ph.D. in irrigation or water management with a minimum of 3 years’ post-doctoral experience and experience in systemic analysis of irrigated agriculture using approaches that combine technical understanding of water management and farming systems, then you fit our profile perfectly. Your research portfolio will be to carry out research activities on irrigation and water management in the Nile Delta in Egypt. You will be based at the IWMI office located at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Cairo, Egypt. You will report to the Principal Researcher based in the Cairo office.
As an Irrigation System Management Specialist, you will:
· contribute to research projects on irrigated agriculture, water management, and institutions, in the Nile delta, in both Old Lands and New Lands, including intensive field work, data analysis, writing of reports and articles;
· help liaise with national partners and stakeholders, and coordinate joint activities;
· contribute to advising master students involved in specific field research;
· assist in gathering reports and scientific information from libraries, universities, development agencies, etc. and preparing syntheses on specific issues; and
· assist in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related work (preparation of layers, etc.).
You will possess:
· a Ph.D. in irrigation or water management;
· minimum of 3 years’ post-doctoral experience;
· experience in systemic analysis of irrigated agriculture using approaches that combine technical understanding of water management and farming systems, as demonstrated in successfully completed reports, a dissertation, or journal articles;
· previous working experience in the Nile delta;
· sensitivity to and interest in the varied dimensions of irrigation management;
· computer literacy, with skills in handling and quality controlling hydrological and water management data;
· ability to articulate quantitative and qualitative analyses;
· good communication and writing skills, with a good command of both oral and written English;
· good record of peer-reviewed publications;
· strong interpersonal skills, ability and interest in conducting intensive farm surveys in an efficient manner; and
· ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, with both local and international partners.
It would be useful if you also had:
· knowledge on institutional analysis; and
· skills in GIS.
This is a nationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a transport and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
