Context
Horn Relief is an international development and humanitarian organization which focuses on increasing sustainable livelihoods for (agro-) pastoralists and coastal communities in Somalia as well as cross-border areas in neighboring countries. Presently it has programs focusing on water & sanitation, food security, non-formal education, vocational training, cash relief, as well as humanitarian emergency response. The present donor portfolio includes European Commission, USAID, UNICEF, HRF, Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oxfam Novib, Oxfam Canada and others.
General Description of the Role:
You will work as part of an OFDA funded program which is addressing food security and improved livelihoods of selected areas within Aweil County. As part of the overall program the Technical Officer will be responsible for identifying and working with returnees with relevant skills and experience to recommence small businesses. The TO will also conduct business and finance training sessions and conduct market surveys.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Development of the small business component of the program • Development of business plan templates • Conducting training sessions on business and finance management • Development of appropriate monitoring and tracking mechanisms • Conducting market surveys and assessments • Represent Horn Relief at appropriate fora • Organize a system for startup grant allocations
Qualifications
• A minimum of Diploma in business studies or other relevant areas • A minimum of 5 years experience working in development in East Africa – experience in South Sudan an advantage • Experience in training on business development and finance • Experience in conducting surveys and analyzing market systems • Excellent written and spoken English is essential • Demonstrated ability to manage processes and maintain accurate records • Demonstrated effective organizational skills and ability to handle work in a timely manner • Demonstrated ability to coordinate tasks to meet deadlines • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with respect for diversity • Experience and skills in the use of software programs such as MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel • Knowledge of or interest in humanitarian programs, as well as a commitment to Horn Relief’s mission and vision
