The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI seeks to recruit a post-doctoral scientist to join the Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) research group within the Biotechnology department. CBPP is regarded as one of the most important livestock diseases within Africa. The position is required for the project: “Accelerating CBPP research towards a better vaccine through the application of synthetic biology” as part of a three-year donor-funded project.
Responsibilities
- Set up of in vitro cell culture assays
- Training on synthetic biology techniques at INRA in France
- Implementation of genome transplantation in Mmc
- Adaptation of genome transplantation for Mmm
- Mutagenesis of Mmm
- In vitro cell culture testing of mutants
Requirements
- Only German candidates are eligible to apply
- A PhD degree obtained no more than 5 years ago in the field of microbiology, immunology or molecular biology
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in multidisciplinary and multicultural research environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel to partners in France (INRA, Bordeaux) and USA (JCVI, Rockville).
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
Salary: 35,000 per annum. All staff are solely responsible for all taxes (income and benefits) levied by the government of their country.
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of renewal for 1 year, contingent upon individual performance.
