SHORT-TERM CONSULTANCY STUDY FOR SOLAR ELECTRIFICATION IN RURAL COMMUNITY-MILLENNIUM VILLAGE PROJECT MBOLA, TABORA
The Millennium Village Project (MVP) has been offering an innovative model for helping rural communities lift themselves out of extreme poverty. The Millennium Villages are proving that by fighting poverty at the village level through community-led development, rural Africa can achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for reducing extreme poverty and hunger by 2015. With the help of new advances in science and technology, project personnel work with villages to create and facilitate sustainable, community-led action plans that are tailored to the villages' specific needs and designed to achieve the MDGs. In Tanzania, UNDP has been implementing the project in cooperation with the partners in Mbola since 2006. Panasonic Corporation has an interest in introducing safe, sustainable and environment friendly device with its technologies in developing countries. To materialize their mission on the ground, Panasonic arranged a fact-finding mission to rural areas of several African countries in 2010, followed by detailed missions to assess applicability of their technology to the needs of local people. One of the projects Panasonic visited is the Millennium Village Project (“Project”), a project implemented by UNDP Tanzania Office, presented their strong records of engagement with target communities and expressed an interest in piloting solar power generation.
