CMI (Crisis Management Initiative) is an independent, non-governmental organisation that works to resolve conflicts and build sustainable peace across the globe. CMI contributes to conflict resolution through mediation, mediation support, dialogue and capacity-building processes. The organisation has offices in Finland and Belgium, as well as field offices in several regions of the world.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, CMI works with various national public and nongovernmental actors, and with intergovernmental actors at various continental and regional levels (African Union, IGAD, ECCAS, KAIPTC, etc.) to strengthen and support mediation and dialogue capacities and to advise relevant processes. Certain specific country-focused programmes are part of our work on the continent.
CMI is offering an unpaid internship position for a 6 month period starting in January/February 2015 for interested and suitable students with a valid university affiliation. Reporting to the Project Manager of the African Mediation Capacities project, the intern will be working as a part of the Sub-Saharan Africa team and the main responsibilities will be:
- To provide general assistance within the African Mediation Capacities project team for mediation support activities
- To assist the project team and wider Sub-Saharan Africa team practically in implementation of activities (support to organisation of events, logistics, etc.)
- To assist in providing substance support for specific activities, e.g. through following of developments of specific priority countries
- To assist the project team in tracking of the projects financial expenditures
The successful candidate is expected to:
- Be affiliated to a university and be near completion of a graduate degree in political science, peace and conflict studies, international relations or a comparable field (essential)
- Familiarity with questions related to African peace and security matters (desirable)
- Have a strong command of the English language (essential)
- Be a native French speaker (essential)
- Have the right to reside and work in Belgium (e.g. through EU citizenship)
- Have excellent networking skills, good judgement and cultural sensitivity
- Be a good team worker while being able to work autonomously, have a pro-active attitude
- Commit to the CMI principle of neutrality
An internship agreement with the student's university will be drawn up for a 6 month period and the successful candidate shall take up duties as soon as possible, ideally in January/February 2015. The working location will be CMI's office in Brussels, Belgium.
