Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP DEPI internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Support Unit (office), the intern will:
1. Develop a sampling criteria for selecting projects from the DEPI portfolio of projects. The intern will use the BSP as the basic guiding document and the principles of result based management in developing the criteria.
2. Take a sample of the projects based on the agreed/approved criteria
3. Conduct an in-depth analysis of the projects vis-a-vis the objectives and principles of the BSP. The study should be accompanied, where necessary and possible, with oral interviews with selected project managers/team members
4. Write a report (max 30 pages including an executive summary of between 2 -5 pages, single space, Cambria font 12) detailing the results of the study and the possible recommendations that may be drawn therefrom
5. Prepare power point presentation of the key findings and recommendations and make a presentation of the report at one of the DEPI management meetings
6. Incorporate feedback from the DEPI management meeting in finalising the report and updating the power point presentation. The presentation and the report will be uploaded on the DEPI intranet for future reference
7. Undertake any other related tasks as may be assigned from time to time

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in at least the third year of a first university degree program or in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) program at the time of application, commencement and during the internship.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in science, social studies, development studies desirable.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language preferably French is desirable.
