Asylum Access Tanzania Research Fellow

Asylum Access Tanzania, is seeking a consultant to assist in analyzing the data and drafting a report of our findings, to be presented at a workshop in Dar es Salaam in late June 2013. The position is unpaid and the individual must be willing to work remotely.
Project Description
Asylum Access is in the process of implementing a survey of migrants in detention in key regions of Tanzania and is looking for someone to assist in analysing data and writing our report. The purpose of the survey is to identify migrants’ legal status, screen migrants who may be released from detention, and identify best practices to reducing unnecessary detention. Although our project will also reach migrants from the Great Lakes region, the primary focus is on reaching migrants from the Horn of Africa, who make up the majority of the detained migrant population.
The project focuses in the following target areas: • Migrants’ transportation routes, purpose of travel, and intended destination • Whether migrants are victims of human trafficking and the extent to which migrants are trafficked • Whether migrants are registered refugees and the reasons for the detention of registered refugees • Whether migrants are children and may be released from detention or reunified with their families • Whether migrants have valid onward visas to leave Tanzania • Whether migrants have the means and willingness to repatriate themselves to their country of origin • Whether and to what extent access to judicial or other procedures may allow the Prisons Service to release migrants from detention, and what the barriers are to access to such procedures
The Consultant will learn first-hand about the challenges and opportunities of global human rights advocacy, and will play a vital role in furthering Asylum Access’s mission to make refugee human rights a reality.
