Ofgem Economist/Policy Analyst

This role is in Ofgem’s Smarter Markets Strategy team. This team is analysing ways in which smart metering could change competition in the energy supply market. We are also considering what role regulation will need to play in supporting new ways for consumers to participate in the market and to encourage innovation and products in the market. Our work aims to identify how Ofgem and others will need to react to the changes which smart metering will bring and in doing so ensure that all consumers benefit from smart metering.

With a focus on economics, you will carry out quantitative and qualitative analysis to inform policy making; draft letters, consultations and policy documents to communicate Ofgem views; contribute to industry meetings to communicate Ofgem positions and oversee industry development of market arrangements and communicate key messages within our team and to other teams.

With a degree, or equivalent in economics, you have the ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues and others outside of your organisation, using these relationships to contribute to decision-making. You have experience in applying quantitative or qualitative decision-making or policy development from a commercial, consulting or public sector experience, and can write clearly and concisely to communicate your views and others to a range of audiences. Your ability to work proactively as part of a team is essential, as is your commitment to upholding Ofgem’s reputation.

Experience in a regulatory agency, economic research institute, economic consultancy or as an economist in government is advantageous, as is an understanding of the regulatory frameworks governing the operation of electricity and gas markets.
