The Institute for the Study of War is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to work as a Development Assistant.
The Development Assistant is responsible for assisting the Development Department in developing, implementing, and monitoring ISW’s fundraising initiatives to enhance and promote the organization's funding base. The Assistant will be highly involved in prospect research and donor identification and will assist with the planning and coordination of cultivation events and activities. The Assistant will also assist in: authoring gift acknowledgments and ongoing communications to prospective and current donors; maintaining records and database information on prospective, past, and current donors; and assisting the Development Department with developing and implementing the strategic development plan.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Process donations; prepare, and send acknowledgement letters.
- Update and maintain records of donor mailings and benefits.
- Maintain foundation, corporation, and individual donor files.
- Assist with the planning and execution of cultivation and stewardship events.
- Identify, conduct, assign, and maintain research on prospect individuals, corporations and foundations.
- Assemble folders and materials in advance of events and meetings.
- Maintain, update, and prepare regular reports and queries from donor database.
- Assist with productions and distribution of direct mail campaigns, newsletters, eCampaigns, event invitations and other donor correspondence.
- Assist in the drafting and editing of correspondence and marketing materials including acknowledgements, cover letters, eCampaigns, newsletters, direct mail, prospect folder materials, and annual reports.
- Assist in the drafting and editing of proposals and reports to individuals, foundations, and corporations.
- Attend regular trainings and educational courses to expand knowledge of development technology and fundraising techniques.
- Participate in the formulation of ISW’s development strategy.
Qualifications
Motivated individuals with an interest in fundraising and/or marketing are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates will have a strong academic or professional background in business, public relations, political science, international relations and/or communications. Candidates with an interest in a career in development or non-profit management are preferred. This position offers a unique opportunity for an individual with excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and an interest in international affairs, fundraising, and public relations to enhance their credentials. The Assistant reports to the Development Director and Development Associate. The Assistant is expected to work full-time. A stipend is provided, with no auxiliary benefits.
