Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique (RTCM) is a newly established business within the Rio Tinto Group. It is currently producing coal from its Benga mine - located near Tete in the Moatize basin - supported by a corporate office in Maputo. RTCM has significant growth ambitions and is looking to expand operations across a series of additional mines over the coming years. In order to successfully deliver these mines, RTCM is also developing a portfolio of infrastructure projects that will support these operations over the long term.
The Manager Commercial Strategy position will be core to the strategic growth and consolidation of RTCM's competitive position within Mozambique. The incumbent will report into the GM of Business Analysis & Operations Support and will take a lead role in all key components of business development within RTCM. While principally focussed on JV partnership identification, planning and execution; the role will also be responsible for the core disciplines that underpin business development including southern Africa competitor intelligence, the RTCM investment opportunity generation process, technical and financial evaluation of opportunities as well as the development and presentation of investment proposals.
The incumbent will be responsible for:
Strategy Development - 30%
- Continuously refresh and refine the business' understanding of the competitor landscape within Mozambique and across southern Africa;
- Assess the potential implications for RTCM of competitor behaviours;
- Use industry-wide and regional competitor analysis to identify key business opportunities;
- Work with the RTCM study teams to identify value accretive opportunities throughout their project lifecycles;
Opportunity Assessment - 35%
- Lead and manage teams, or work independently, to investigate, prioritise and select opportunities in line with RTCM's strategic aims - either on development, partnership or acquisition opportunities.
- Apply portfolio / industry / asset attractiveness criteria to evaluate the opportunities;
- Apply appropriate valuation techniques to the opportunities;
- Prepare and present opportunities to the RTCM investment committee for approval.
Opportunity Execution Work - 35%
- Perform and lead due diligence and multi-discipline teams (technical, financial, industry, legal, human resources etc.) to deliver opportunities;
- Develop and negotiate terms and conditions with counterparties that are value accretive for RTCM.
HSE & Leadership
- Ensure that all work undertaken is performed in line with Rio Tinto Safety Standards;
- Ensure safety engagement across the business in performing work of the role and supporting the business in achieve safety objectives;
- Foster an environment that caters to multi-cultural teams and creates effective relationships with the local communities;
- Train Mozambican team members in Rio Tinto standards and core business development skills.
Minimum Requirements
- Degree in business administration, finance & MBA or Post graduate qualifications in related disciplines (preferred);
- Minimum 5 years experience in a commercially orientated role preferably underpinned with a strong understanding of value drivers within the mining industry;
- Demonstrable commercial and business acumen coupled with prior negotiation experience;
- Extensive financial modelling capabilities;
- Experience in formulating and delivering investment proposal development to all levels within the business and across nationalities.
