Position: The African Academy of Sciences seeks to recruit a self-motivated individual to manage and lead the development of the Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP), a new pan African standard defining the best practice for managing grants that will the funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council in the UK. The incumbent will, under the leadership of the AESA Director and a Senior Advisor for the GFGP, also organise and facilitate workshops to collate input from stakeholders about how the new GFGP standard should look like. The programme manager will develop and implement a communication strategy for the GFGP to ensure it’s widely publicised and used. The contract is for one year with, options for renewal.

Qualifications: A masters in finance, environmental studies, biological or physical sciences or an MBA and training in Prince 2 or MS Project management are required. Five years’ experience in an operational role in a grant funded NGO or a research organisation in a low- or middle –income-country covering finance, human resources, procurement and logistics, strong writing and communication skills.

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is both an honorific society and a development oriented mobiliser of the entire African science and technology community. It recently launched a new programmatic unit, the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) in partnership with the African Union’s technical arm, the NEPAD Agency (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) and with support from three global funders. It aims to foster the long-term sustainable funding and development of global health research leadership and scientific excellence in Africa. Under AESA, the AAS has partnered with international organisations to develop the Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP), a pan African standard to define the best and universally accept practice for managing grants, which is funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council.
