METALLURGICAL FRONT LINE LEADER (SUPERINTENDENT)
African Barrick Gold’s Bulyanhulu mine in Tanzania seeks to appoint a Metallurgical Front Line Leader (Superintendent). The incumbent will report to the Process Plant Manager and will be responsible to provide leadership to the Metallurgical Team and Technical Support to Process Operations to ensure optimum and cost effective metallurgical performance in a safe working environment, and perform the Quality Control and Assurance function for the Process Plant.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide leadership to ensure that employees and contractors (SGS Laboratory) adhere to Safety and Environmental standards that exceed worldwide industry practice as well as any applicable legislative requirements.
• Develop and foster productive working relationships with the operations and maintenance departments as well as with the service departments.
• Identify capital projects which can add value to the business and then support the implementation of such projects to ensure successful improvements.
• Train and Develop Key National Staff, in line with the Mine’s localisation commitments.
• Identify process constraints and provide innovative solutions to reducing or eliminating such constraints.
• Lead activities of the Metallurgical Laboratory and Metallurgy Team to assure cost effective and high quality metal recovery activities, metallurgical performance and to optimize Company’s financial status and net smelter return.
• Ensure daily, weekly and monthly reporting procedures for production, metal recovery and operating cost are maintained and updated regularly.
• Ensure that metal accounting and reconciliation process is robust, well documented, and the process is followed to ensure SOX compliance, for the Process Plant.
• Coordinate Metallurgical Accounting and Metallurgical Reconciliation procedures for the Process Plant.
• Ensure Cyanide Code Compliance standards are maintained within the operation.
• Ensure tailings dam is operated as per the engineered and approved design to minimise environmental risks.
• Implement and monitor Process Plant budgeting and cost control systems and Reagent Control standards. Process Plant Consumables cost per tonne is a Key Performance Indicator.
• Provide technical input into development of Training packages.
• Manage Sampling and Process Control Laboratory, including calibration of plant technical equipment (e.g., Sample Cutters, Cyanide Analyser, WAD CN Analyser, Courier)
• Manage and Monitor process plant water balance program, pertaining to the use and management thereof for the process plant.
• Relieve Plant Manager if and when required.
• Responsible and accountable for security within the Metallurgical Laboratory, including process control stations, with assistance, advice and input from the site Security Manager and his Plant delegate, the Process Security Superintendent.
• Responsible and accountable for performing inspections of areas within the Metallurgical Laboratory that may collect, trap or store gold, and have this cleaned and sealed to prevent losses. Assist the Processing Plant Manager ensuring that these inspections and inspection results are documented.
• Responsible for managing non-compliance with security standards and procedures within the metallurgical laboratory.
• Ensure that a weekly GIC reconciliation is done for the Process Plant, based on the overall inventory movement (carbon gold, dore, gravity circuit), and this is recorded and continually monitored for any unexplained variances.
• Maintain an electronic metal balance which shall record sufficient information to be able to compare the flow of total gold into and out of the CIL Plant.
• Be the Quality Control and Assurance point of reference for all plant operational parameters and measurements (densities, flow rates, reagent concentrations, reagent addition rates), and provide technical support to the Main Plant Front Line Leader and the CIL Plant Front Line Leader, and ultimately to the Process Plant Manager, as part of operational decision making.
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Education Requirements:
• Tertiary qualification in Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering from a recognized Tanzanian or International University.
Experience Requirements:
• At least 10 years experience in a Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering and Processing Environment, with a minimum of 2 years Gold Plant Superintendent experience.
• Commissioning Experience, preferably of related to Gold CIL projects.
• Strong Gold Plant Technical background and in-depth understanding of Gold Metallurgy, and Technical Metallurgical functions
• Sound understanding of business imperatives and financial aspects of Metallurgy and Process Management aspects including budget development, leadership and cost control.
• Exposure to the challenges of operating in remote sites and in particular developing countries.
• Excellent interpersonal and management skills with the ability to lead and motivate a team of metallurgical professionals to achieve processing and business targets.
• Experience in the management of technical, operational, financial and maintenance activities in a process plant.
• Ability to mentor and work with people from a wide range of nationalities and cultures and the willingness to shares skills and knowledge with other.
• Excellent planning, organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities and the self discipline to achieve tasks on time with minimal supervision.
• High level conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to identify and implement strategies and improvements (Departmental and Company). .
