The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking for a Junior Professional Officer to fill the position of Junior Nutritionist (P2 Level) with our VAM/Nutrition Unit in Nairobi, Kenya.
Brief description of VAM/Nutrition unit in Kenya
The VAM/Nutrition unit in Kenya Country office is a dynamic unit that supports all programme types implemented through two PRRO projects (Relief and Recovery in the ASAL, Refugee operation in Dadaab and Kakuma) and a Country Programme. The Kenya country office implement several nutrition specific programmes such as treatment of acute malnutrition, prevention of acute malnutrition as well as prevention of stunting and prevention of micronutrient deficiencies. It also has a nutritional programme for HIV clients. All of these programmes are implemented through strong government ministries who coordinate all interventions. WFP Kenya also has several nutrition sensitive programmes such as School meals, P4P, FFA, CFA etc.
Under the direct supervision of Head of VAM/Nutrition, the JPO will perform the following responsibilities:
- Assist in the management/supervision/monitoring of IMAM programmes, implemented in more than 1000 public health facilities across Kenya;
- Actively participate in regular workshop for implementing partners in the management of IMAM;
- Participate in nutrition related coordination forums, working groups, technical meetings and training activities;
- Provide guidance to the integration and streamlining of HIV nutrition specific activities in liaison with WFP HIV unit and MoPHS;
- Provide guidance and technical support to the pilot project of introducing MNP pilot in schools;
- Participate in Nutrition surveys in Dadaab and Kakuma;
- Participate in monthly Health coordination meetings with UNHCR;
- Assist in the roll out of Micronutrient powders in Northern Kenya;
- Contribute to food and nutrition security related studies to enrich knowledge in key areas that would ultimately enhance WFP’s contribution to ending hunger;
- Develop guidance for estimating IMAM coverage;
- Provide technical support and guidance to future programme development and project documents;
- Assist in the consolidation of nutrition information from surveys and surveillance, and in the generation of analytical reports;
- Participate in nutritional advocacy as and when required.
Qualifications and experience
- Advanced University degree or University degree with experience and training/courses in one or more of the following disciplines: Nutrition, Public Health, Dietetics;
- 3 years post graduate, progressively responsible, job related experience in Public Nutrition, including emergency nutrition;
- Proficiency in Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint,Outlook) and nutrition related statistical analysis packages such as ENA for SMART and EPINut.
Working Languages
- Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) and intermediate knowledge (intermediate/level B) of another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages).
Terms and Conditions
The selected candidate will be employed on a JPO fixed-term contract (P2 level) for an initial duration of two years with a probationary period of one year.
