Responsibilities: Under the authority and supervision of the Director of UNU-FLORES, the successful candidate will be entrusted with the following tasks: • Support in building up the research programme(s) of UNU-FLORES on resources management, considering the close inter-linkage of water, soil and waste, and publish research results in peerreviewed journals and book chapters; • Perform fund-raising tasks for research projects including their application, coordination and management; • Apply systems analysis approaches to the analysis of material fluxes and resource inventory and flows; • Perform scenario analyses to forecast material fluxes under conditions of global environmental and socioeconomics; • Develop, modify and apply modeling tools to perform such analyses; • Advise and provide guidelines for data management enabling/facilitating integrative analyses of data sets; • Choose and apply statistical methods and tools for data analysis; • Contribute teaching modules in the upcoming postgraduate programmes of the institute and supervise students and interns in the covered areas; • Collaborate in developing study programmes on integrated resources management; • Represent UNU-FLORES at major conferences addressing the issues related to system and flux analysis considering global change assessment and nexus approach to the sustainable management of environmental resources; • Contribute to activities concerning capacity development related to integrated resources management and the required tools; and • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Director.
Required Qualifications and Competencies: • A PhD in the natural sciences or engineering related to systems and flux analysis and modeling, artificial intelligence applied to resources management, forecasting and scenario planning, mathematical programming, economics. Experience in the field of resources management would be an asset; • A minimum of three (3) years, post-PhD, of progressively relevant work experience in managing research programmes in academia, research or other organisations; • Proven strong research background and publications in areas related to the issues of systems and flux analysis; • Experience in managing and seeking research funding from donors and international funding agencies; Proven skills in project management; • Good knowledge of available modeling approaches and tools related to Hydrology/Substance Flows or related areas; • Experience in dealing with large and diverse data sets and their statistical analysis; • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of other official UN languages would be an asset; • Professional experience in teaching postgraduate programmes would be an asset; • Good team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity; • Highly self-motivated and organized; • Detail oriented, with a professional and conscientious attitude; • Ability to independently prioritize; and • Willingness to travel. Post adjustment is subject to change.

The Rector reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a level below that is advertised. Duration of Contract: This is a full time fixed-term appointment. The period of initial appointment will be for a period of two (2) years with the possibility of renewal on a rolling fixed-term appointment basis, subject to satisfactory work performance. The mandatory age of retirement for United Nations staff is 62 years.
