Responsibilities: Under the authority and supervision of the Director of UNU-FLORES, the successful candidate will be entrusted with the following tasks: • Support in building up the research programme(s) of UNU-FLORES on resources management, considering the close inter-linkage of water, soil and waste; • Support and enhance UNU-FLORES´s endeavors towards institutional capacity development required for sustainable management of environmental resources; • Perform fund-raising tasks for research projects including their application, coordination and management; • Create innovative capacity development methodologies, collect and analyze methodological approaches benchmarked as successful for nexus approach to the sustainable management of environmental resources with the aim of preparing a first draft of several 'general' capacity development methodologies. This will be supplemented by the development of indicators and monitoring approaches as well as the implementation of pilot projects to test those innovative methodologies, followed by their evaluation and adaptation to the specific contexts as required; • Support the inception of the Capacity Development Observatory, notably with regard to the topical and technical setup of online databases; • Coordinate and contribute to all activities of UNU-FLORES related to capacity development and governance; • Coordinate and amalgamate the contributions of all sections of UNU-FLORES to postgraduate programmes; • Advise, coordinate and organize the implementation of management concepts; • Test and share innovative tools and approaches for capacity development management and practice with strategic external partners; • Lead in designing and implementing results-focused capacity development programmes—including needs assessment, results framework, identification of indicators, monitoring and evaluation for program adjustments, and results reporting; • Apply systems analysis approaches to the analysis of material fluxes and resource inventory and flows; • Contribute teaching modules in the upcoming postgraduate programmes of the institute and supervise students and interns in the covered areas; • Support educational affairs of UNU-FLORES at the postgraduate level; • Collaborate in developing study programmes on integrated resources management; and • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Director.
Required Qualifications and Competencies: • A PhD in environmental governance, environmental capacity building or in a similar field with broad experience in issues of capacity development and governance related to the field of resources management; • A minimum of three (3) years, post-PhD, of progressively relevant work experience in managing research programmes in academia, research or other organisations; • Proven strong research background and publications in areas related to the issues of resources management and governance; • Experience in managing and seeking research funding from donors and international funding agencies; • Proven skills in project management; • Good knowledge of available methodologies, modeling approaches and tools related to individual and institutional capacity development in the field of environmental resources; • Experience in dealing with large and diverse data sets and their statistical analysis; • Professional experience in teaching postgraduate programmes would be an asset; • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of other official UN languages would be an asset; Page 3 of 3 • Good team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity; • Highly self-motivated and organized; • Detail oriented, with a professional and conscientious attitude; • Ability to independently prioritize; and • Willingness to travel. Remuneration: We offer competitive net salary (tax-exempted) at P-2/P-3 level commensurate to level of experience and allowances including post adjustment. Post adjustment is subject to change. The post carries the standard set of United Nations benefits and entitlements for international positions in the UN Common Systems, including participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, the possibility of participation in a health insurance programme, education grant, removal expenses and home leave. Duration of Contract: This is a full time fixed-term appointment. The period of initial appointment will be for a period of two (2) years with the possibility of renewal on a rolling fixed-term appointment basis, subject to satisfactory work performance.
