About the organization
The World Agroforestry Centre is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health.
The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in 23 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We are supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and receive funding from over 50 different donors.
Main purpose of the job
To support the establishment and maintenance of the knowledge management system Unit and activities for the Centre’s knowledge assets in achieving its institutional goals.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Participate in the development and enhancement of the knowledge management system, and contribute regular updates
- Search and collect up-to-date information on specific topics from internal and external resources
- Support and participate in facilitating knowledge sharing and assist with research
- Maintain close relationships with focal points for knowledge management in Science Domains, CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs), and Regional Offices in deploying knowledge management activities
- Establish, maintain, and manage operational relationships with other Global Research Support Units, Communications Unit, Capacity Development Unit, and Information Technology Unit in co-ordinating knowledge management services and activities
- Act as the focal point for the Unit, handling external enquiries for information and internal questions and queries
- Manage the administration of meetings, workshops and conferences
- Manage efficiently procurement, operations and administration
- Support all the Unit’s travel co-ordination activities, including the handling of travel bookings, requests and travel expense claims in liaison with ICRAF Travel and Finance Units
- Prepare periodic and ad-hoc reports on Unit knowledge management activities
- Prepare and update the unit’s financial documents for budget monitoring, reporting and audit purposes
- Carry out any other duties to reinforce effective and efficient program administration
Qualifications and experience
- An university degree or its equivalent, preferably in the field of knowledge management, journalism, public relations, business administration, or a related field
- Relevant experience in a knowledge, information management or administrative role, preferably in a global organization
- Proficiency in the usage of computers and office software packages
- Administrative and finance experience
- Excellent written and spoken English skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Prior experience with the CGIAR is an asset
- Research and gather information from a wide variety of internal and external sources
- Apply good judgement in the context of assignments given
- Make decisions independently on the appropriate processes to follow, and actions to take in correspondence with standard policies and procedures
- Commit to utilizing and safeguarding resources within and beyond the Unit
- Seek out opportunities to provide more efficient and proactive services
- Work effectively in a multicultural environment
- Interrelate in a customer-friendly fashion with staff at all levels as well as with external partners
- Work with different groups of staff and partners in a global, virtual team
