OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
To ensure continuing availability of valid scientific, technical, managerial and other information relating to health to Member States in the official languages of WHO.
Description of duties:
1. To translate into French from English a wide variety of scientific, medical and other technical texts dealing with public health. Such translations may be considered final and not subject to further review;
2. To revise for accuracy and conformity with established WHO terminology and style texts translated by less experienced, temporary or outside translators, and to edit French translations, as required;
3. To contribute to the establishment of accurate terminology in French and to promote the TRA terminology data base;
4. To perform other related duties, as required. In order to undertake the above activities the incumbent is called upon to: a) apply linguistic and analytical skills to produce accurate, concise and elegant translations; b) undertake reference and terminology research work as required; c) consult with originator or competent units to clarify ambiguous points and solve problems relating to terminology or meaning;d) draw attention to any errors or inconsistencies in texts to ensure that they are corrected in the original and in other language versions as appropriate; e) give advice and guidance to less experienced translators and to trainees as required; f) give expert advice on French usage on request.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
University degrees both in translation/languages and in a scientific area, preferably biology, relevant to the work of WHO.
Skills:
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of translation. Wide scientific and general culture. Ability to work in a team, tact and discretion. Familiarity with health related subjects. Ability to use computer equipment. Knowledge of other scientific areas (for example: vaccines, microbiology, biosafety).

Experience: Essential
At least seven years of experience in translation in French, of which at least three are self-revised.
Desirable
Experience at the international level. Experience in terminology or in applications of computer science to translation.
Languages:
Expert knowledge of English and French are required.
