Resident Journalism Advisor - Maputo, Mozambique
Background: Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.
General Function: Internews Network is seeking a Resident Journalism Advisor candidate for a potential USAID funded Media Sector Development Program in Mozambique. The goal of the program is to support the professionalization and empowerment of independent media in Mozambique. The expected outcomes are: • Increased professional capacity of the Mozambican Media Sector; • Strengthened business management/organizational capacity of media organization to improve long-term financial viability; • Improved quality of journalism education at the School of Communication and Arts at UEM; • Increased ability of community radio stations to provide more and better information to listeners; • Strengthened ability of Mozambican organizations to advocate for press freedom and an improved legal enabling environment for media. The program will focus on improving the quality of reporting about health using mass media, particularly radio and addressing the situation of victims of trafficking in persons, both women trafficked for sexual purposes and children abducted or sold into labor. The Resident Journalism Advisor provides training, professional advice and guidance in print, radio and “new media” journalism, radio production, newsroom management and also designs journalism training programs, including classroom lectures, online modules, and self-study sessions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Oversee the training department: Coordination of in-house mentors, their reporting schedules, activities, and curriculums, plus the organization of training workshops and seminars conducted by consultant trainers. • Conduct regular basic journalism training workshops and carry out regular follow-up mentoring of trainee journalists • Coordinate with local media outlets to facilitate on-site trainings and trainings conducted at the Internews office. • Supervise activities of the media monitoring and evaluation staff as well as their reporting schedules. • Assist with review of local media outlets for production and equipment grant awards. • Work in close collaboration with university journalism departments to on curriculum development and implementation, and establish student media, such as newspaper, radio and websites. • Design and develops new curricular materials using visual training aids with multimedia and distant learning technologies for journalist training workshops; • Prepares and assembles materials for monthly and quarterly reports, in compliance with donor guidelines. • Reports to and strategizes with Country Director on new directions to help independent media in region, specifically through the use of “new media” and “social networking” approaches. • Maintain relationships with colleagues, partner stations, and donors through reporting
QUALIFICATIONS: • Demonstrable Radio/print journalism experience • English and Portuguese language skills required. • Experience of / interest in the creation, application and development of “new media” and web-based approaches to newsgathering and dissemination: website, mobile phone, SMS, blogging, twitter, crowd-sourcing/crowd feeding, citizen journalism etc • Journalism training experience in a developing world context including training in political/policy coverage, human trafficking issues, human rights coverage, gender issues, economic reporting, environmental reporting and coverage of development issues • Media management / newsroom management experience. • Experience in the design and development of curriculum and expertise in developing educational materials • Experience living and working in region/developing world • Knowledge of Mozambique and the current social, political and economic circumstances in the country desirable. • Experience in a supervisory position (desirable) • Demonstrated ability to mobilize communities, encourage the inclusion of marginalized groups, and incorporate media development practices and methodologies into development programs. • Ability to build and strengthen other media organizations. • Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place. • Willingness to travel extensively to conduct trainings in resource-poor (and frequently uncomfortable) journalistic environments • Relevant university degree.
