The Department of History at Durham University seeks to appoint up to two early-career lecturers in African History (Grade 7). Applicants should show how their research work will complement that of existing staff in the Department, and preference may be given to applicants whose research specialism is the history of north-eastern Africa – broadly defined to embrace the region from Egypt to Tanzania – since c. 1800 CE. The History Department is widely recognized as a leading centre of historical research and teaching, and consistently features in the top three UK History departments in league tables.
Durham University is home to the internationally-renowned Sudan Archive, and the Department of History has an established reputation as a centre for the study of the region, and a significant profile in research dissemination and engagement with non-academic research users. The appointee will work with Professor Justin Willis and Dr Cherry Leonardi to develop research and teaching at all levels. More information about the Department of History is available at http://www.dur.ac.uk/history/.
The successful applicant(s) will be expected to teach and collaborate in modules on African history at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels. They will also supervise postgraduate research and will undertake outstanding research leading to publications which have high standards of international significance, and to strong applications for external grants and with potential for external impact. They will take a full part in the life of the Department, and show ability to exercise academic leadership.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in the University.
