African Barrick Gold seeks to appoint Sustainability Manager’s at our North Mara and Buzwagi mine sites in Tanzania. These roles will report to the Mine General Manager’s, and will ensure that the mine site conducts business in a manner that protects people, assets, license to operate and the environment whilst delivering lasting social and economic benefits to the communities.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Set long-term sustainability direction to support the delivery of the mine site’s 5 year strategic business plan
• Up-to-date Sustainability Plan to support the mine site’s strategic business plan to ensure the health and safety of employees, sustainability governance and risk management processes, contributions to improved standards of living and self-sustaining communities; minimization of the mine site’s impact on the environment and biodiversity
• Up-to-date Occupational Health and Safety, Environment, Security and Community Relations plans
• Assessment of sustainability risks
• Perform Proactive sustainability control mechanisms
• Sustainability governance structure and committee
2. Maintain emergency preparedness and response in accordance to ABG standards, policies and procedures
• Improved identification and mitigation of emergency preparedness risks
• Develop and review robust and flexible emergency management plan
• Develop and review effective framework for mine emergency preparedness, response and recovery decisions
• Maintain business case for improved emergency to senior management
• Develop credible training procedures and scenarios to improve emergency preparedness and response
• Put systems in place to identify, mitigate and effectively and quickly respond to foreseeable crises and emergencies to enable the operation to safely return to value creation as swiftly and smoothly as possible
• Conduct vulnerability assessment on a regular basis
3. Reduce Safety Risks in accordance to ABG standards and Tanzanian legislation
• Put control and monitoring systems in place for safety in accordance with Tanzanian legislative requirements
• Absolute Compliance with ABG and Tanzanian standards and norms in the field of safety
• Assessment and mitigation of potential fatal safety risks
• Zero fatalities at the mine operation
• Year-on-year improvement in Total Reportable Injuries Frequency Rate
• Embedded safety mechanisms into all business processes at the mine site
• Develop and review the 2 year safety improvement plan on a regular basis
• Deliver 2 year safety improvement plan
• Develop and implement promotion programme for safety awareness within the mine site
• Constantly monitor the compliance with safety standards, policies and procedures
• Initiate corrective actions when necessary
• Provide safety reports on safety performance on a periodic basis
• Provide safety advice to mine site management and propose corrective actions on safety related-issues as needed
• Ensure that safety-related documentation and records are available and up-to-date
4. Reduce Occupational Health Risks in accordance to ABG standards and Tanzanian legislation
• Up-to-date medical surveillance programme at the mine site
• Regular health risk assessment for all job categories
• Up-to-date health risk mitigation programme
• Embedded health awareness mechanisms into all business process at the mine site
• Year-on-year improvements in malaria cases
• Maintain and promote employees’ health and working capacity
• Constant improvements in working environment and work to become conducive to health
• Develop and review Occupational health 2 year improvement plan in a direction which supports health at work and in doing so also promotes a positive social climate and smooth operation
• Maintain the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations
• Reduce sick leave and departures from health caused by their working conditions among employees
5. Ensure cost effective high level services provided by the mine site medical centre
• High level standard of medical services to employees and communities
• Cost effectiveness of medical services in accordance to the mine site business plans
• Cost analysis provided on a regular basis
• Constantly improve medical services in quality and cost
• Deliver and review 2 year plan of medical services development at the mine site
• Maintain medical facilities and equipment in accordance to ABG standards and Tanzanian legislation
• Effective documentation and records management
• Maintain standards of cleaning and hygiene throughout the medical centre
• Smooth running of the medical services through adequate staffing levels, including co-ordinating the doctors’ annual leave and time away from the medical centre
• Maintain an effective appointment system
• Regularly assess doctors’ performance
6. Reduce Environmental Risks in accordance to ABG standards and Tanzanian legislation
• Put control and monitoring systems in place for environment in accordance with Tanzanian legislative requirements
• Absolute Compliance with ABG and Tanzanian standards and norms in the field of environment
• Assessment and mitigation of potential environmental risks
• No significant environmental incidents resulting from the mine site operations
• Minimise any adverse environmental impacts from the mine site operations
• Put plans and controls in place to identify, assess and mitigate environmental impacts
• Prevent or minimise associated impacts to biodiversity and the related benefits derived from ecosystems
• Detail controls to limit the mine site’s impact on water resources.
• Each operation set targets and implement projects to address environmental risks and to monitor progress on project implementation.
7. Ensure active and favourable relationships with community and local state authorities to preserve the mine site’s license to operate
• Positive relationships with key stakeholders in the mine site’s mining activities, surrounding communities and indigenous populations, in accordance with ABG Community Relations policies
• No significant community incidents resulting from the mine site operations
• Avoid or minimise any adverse impact of the mine site’s operations on local communities well-being
• Up-to-date Community and State Authorities Cooperation Plan
• Put controls in place to identify, assess and mitigate incidents that may potentially impact the mine site’s local communities
• Up-to-date Community Contribution Plans to have a positive effect on the quality of life of local people and communities
• Up-to-date local procurement programs to improve the capacity of the mine site’s local communities to provide products and services to the mine site’s operations
• Put processes in place to accept, assess and resolve community concerns, complaints and grievances about the performance of the mine site and its impact on the communities
• All reputational risks are identified and resolved before they are communicated outside by the press
8. Protect the mine site’s employees and assets
• Absolute Compliance with ABG standards and systems and other security initiatives, reporting requirements, security strategies and audit action plans
• Identification and effective management of security risk
• Up-to-date security operating framework that has res
pect for human rights and freedoms
• Put preventive mechanisms in place to reduce security risks in the mine site’s units
• Optimise value/cost ration in regard to security service level
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Education Requirements:
• Relevant qualification related to the role
Experience Requirements:
• Experience in a similar diversified high level portfolio as described in the profile
• Strong desire to coach, train and develop people
• High computer literacy is essential – MS Office Suite etc.
• Solid experience operating in complex environments
• Previous experience in a multi cultural developing country environment .
