Role Purpose In your job you will have to develop and implement strategic and tactical legal plans in support of the company’s overall business strategy. This position reports to the General Counsel and, like other Associate General Counsel positions at Millicom, has both geographic and functional areas of responsibility. The geographic areas relate to certain operations in Africa, to whom you will (working with the local legal teams) provide advice on all legal matters relating to day-to-day business and strategic transactions. In addition, you will support certain functions, most notably Procurement & Supply Chain, on a global basis. You will be required to undertake analysis of factual and qualitative information in complicated and/or novel situations. Key Responsibilities Legal support and advice • Optimize the rights and interests of the company in negotiations, institutional matters and litigious disputes (Understand the global business and the legal environment, Be available to the business) • Support the company in legal proceedings (Preserve the rights and interests of the company, Protect shareholders, board members, executives and employees) • Oversee and be ultimately responsible for providing legal advice in relation to employment law, acquisitions, financing transactions and other major contracts (Give prompt and useful advice) Process Management and Education • Help develop and implement a new contracting process together with the Supply Chain and Procurement team • Work with operations to develop proper legal processes. (Ensure control of suppliers and operate in accordance with legal compliance requirements) • Help develop and implement a litigation management process Business Development • Play a pivotal role in acquisitions and divestitures through providing expertise from both a legal standpoint and commercial perspective (Direct legal teams responsible for documentation and completion of acquisitions and divestitures. Undertake analysis of factual and qualitative information to take decisions within the objectives of the company) Compliance with Operational Excellence initiatives and regulatory requirements • To comply with internal controls related to the legal function. Position Requirements QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE • Degree in Law ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE • At least 8-10 years top-notch legal experience, preferably in a corporate legal department as well as a top tier law firm. • Strong transactional background, including mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance transactions. • Africa and telecom industry experience (especially as relates to supply chain transactions) would be preferred. • Fluency in French would be an advantage.
