The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) is the premier Bar Association of Tanzania Mainland, founded in 1954 and governed by the Tanganyika Law Society Act, Cap 307 R.E. 2002. The TLS is a professional association for Lawyers in Mainland Tanzania with the prime objective of promoting the rule of law by representing its members' interests and by advising the government and the general public on matters pertaining to law, human rights and access to justice.
The Society, taking cognizance of its dynamic membership and the ever evolving law practice environment, wishes to recruit a new team of secretariat members to ensure service delivery excellence. The TLS seeks to fill the vacancy:-
Overview:
This position is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of the Society's publication and visibility work. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and working hand in hand with the Program Officer-Research and Advocacy and other program officers, key member committees. The Publications and visibility Assistant Program Officer ensures that the Society has a meaningful and value-added input in the legal profession, and that the Society promotes the advancement and dissemination of legal knowledge to its members and beyond.
Competencies:
This Publication and Visibility Program Officer will steer TLS publications under the direction of the CEO and the Council. The position requires significant initiative, attention to detail, excellent research and writing skills and a passion for the issues that the TLS must advance as it strives to improve the quality of legal practice among its members and the working of civil society ofTanzania.
Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for the preparation of papers and electronic publication of the Tanzania Lawyer Journal with the aim of promoting, comprehensively, the development of local and international legal culture, with the co-ope arion of the Research and Publications Committee;
2. Responsible for the preparation and promotion of various TLS Publications including Wakili Bulletin and TLS Newsflash;
3. Develop regular press statements and position papers and prepare press conferences;
4. Responsible for conceptualizing and publication of the annual Human Rights Report of the TLS; TLS' Law Reports; Commentary on Selected Court Decisions;
5. Follow up and safeguard against the TLS copyright violation;
6. In collaboration with the CEO and Manager Finance and Administration, to identify and develop proposals with a view of securing appropiiate external funding for the Society publication and networking activities;
7. Ensure that the TLS publications generate income in all legal means available
8. Organize meetings of the Human Rights Committee, and the Research and publication Committee as required; communicate with the Chapters about issues relevant to the Committees and bring to the attention of the national committees;
9. Together with the Member Services Programme Officer and under the supervision of the CEO, design, develop and oversee the TLS Legal Resource Center.
Qualification and Experience:
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree; \.
Three years work experience at executive level
Compelling and Accurate writing style in English and Swahili
Good organization, patience and ability to pick up things quickly and interactively. Awareness of Social Media and digital marketing to give TLS publications the widest visibility. Proficient computing skills including word processing and spreadsheets.
Knowledge of the legal profession in Tanzania
Willingness to work a flexible schedule when required
