The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) is the premier Bar Association of Tanzania Mainland, founded in 1954 and governed by the Tanganyika Law Society Act, Cap 307 R.E. 2002. The TLS is a professional association for Lawyers in Mainland Tanzania with the prime objective of promoting the rule of law by representing its members' interests and by advising the government and the general public on matters pertaining to law, human rights and access to justice.
The Society, taking cognizance of its dynamic membership and the ever evolving law practice environment, wishes to recruit a new team of secretariat members to ensure service delivery excellence. The TLS seeks to fill the vacancy:-
Overview:
Working closely with the Program Officer - Member Services and under the direct supervision of the CEO this position ensures that the highest standard of ethical practice is maintained within the profession. Infusing and maintaining the highest ethical standards across the extended legal profession are among the most important responsibilities of the TLS. The role of the ethics officer emerge amidst demand for a more accountable, transparent, and ethical business culture Within legal practice and a testimony to the TLS's recognition of the importance of ethical conduct In assuring success and longevity of any legal practice. Properly constituted, this position is a key ingredient in building and sustaining legal services Investment and stakeholder trust and in protecting the society from professional malpractice.
Responsibilities:
Oversee the implementation of the Advocates (professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules,. .
2.Develop, initiate, maintain, and revise policies and procedures for the general operation of the Ethics Program and Its related activities to prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct of Advocates;
3. Oversee the implementation of the TLS Ethics Program . .
4.Advance public knowledge and shape dialogue about Advocates' ethics through Advocates' forums, TLS publications and the media; and Advocates' remuneration as an important aspect that contribute to professional ethics,
5. Organize meetings of the Ethics Committee and Remunerations Committee as required; communicate With the chapters about issues relevant to the Ethics Committees and bring to the attention of the National Ethics committee chairperson,
Responsible for conceptualizing and publication, on annual basis, of a Literary magazine aiming at providing emotional encouragement and consolation to lawyers and to bring positive and friendly Image of lawyers to the public, and.
7. In collaboration with the CEO and Manager Finance and Administration, to Identify and develop proposals with a view of securing appropriate external funding for the TLS Ethics Program.
Qualification and Experience:
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree;
Three years work experience at executive level Excellent writing and oral communication skills
Proficient computing skills including v.ord processing and spreadsheets. Knowledge of the legal profession in Tanzania
Knowledge of and passion for ethical conduct and compliance; Strong personal character and a commitment to integrity Ability to work independently and manage time effectively Willingness to work a flexible schedule when required
