Purpose of the role
The purpose of the Caterer’s role is to ensure that every student is provided with plenty of good, varied food.
As the Caterer, you would be a very important part of the customer-facing team, not to be confused with a behind-the-scenes cook. It is an important reassurance for students that the Caterer is someone they feel they know, trust and can ask for help and support. As you would be normally around the kitchen and social areas, you are likely to have a great deal of contact with students at the house.
Key responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of this role are to:
- Prepare breakfast and dinner for student groups
- Ensure that all meals are provided at the house in line with operations guidelines
- Ensure that all areas used for food preparation and consumption are hygienic and are cleaned and maintained to a high standard at all times
- Ensure that all areas used for food preparation and consumption are kept safe and tidy at all times, and that dishes etc. are properly cleared away after meals
- Ensure that all food in the Gap Medics house is stored hygienically in line with commercial catering standards
- Ensure that all ingredients and food items provided to students are of good quality and from reputable suppliers so as not to present any health concerns
- Ensure that a good vegetarian option is always made available to students who want it and a reasonable effort is made to cater for other dietary requirements
- Ensure an adequate supply of safe, clean drinking water is available to students at the house at all times
- Ensure that the kitchen is always well-stocked for self-service by students
- Ensure that all food and kitchen waste is disposed of properly so as to avoid any risks to human health and minimise negative impact on the environment
Provide the Programme Manager with complete, detailed and accurate accounts for all spending of catering budgets at the end of every week.
Budget handling
Under the guidance of the Programme Manager, you will be expected to have some responsibility for how the food budget is spent.
Other duties
Being around the kitchen and social areas much of the day, you would have an important role in general student supervision.
You are also likely to job-share with the Housekeeper (because both are based at the house and have peak work loads at different times).
Working hours
You must be willing to work split shifts and plan your own time around the needs of the programme. For example, you may begin at 6am to prepare breakfast and not finish dinner service until 8pm, but this does not mean working a solid 14 hour day! Rather, it should be possible to take a few hours off during the day, returning for duty when necessary.
Your working week would normally begin with preparation of dinner for Sunday evening and finish with assisting students in preparing food on Friday night. All day Saturday and Sunday morning will normally be time off.
