TechnoServe is an international, non-profit economic development organization founded in 1968 out of a conviction that a vibrant private sector is an essential foundation for economic growth and poverty reduction. TechnoServe undertakes targeted, catalytic technical assistance and other programming to increase the competitiveness of entrepreneurs, businesses and industries that in-turn provide sustainable employment, inclusion of the poor and increased incomes. TechnoServe operates in 25 developing countries with over 1000 employees. A substantial portion of our work is in agriculture, enhancing farm productivity and commodity quality and addressing gaps in processing and other agribusiness capacities. Our programs increase smallholder access to new technologies, aggregation and storage mechanisms, markets, critical information and finance. TechnoServe also undertakes structured programs to identify and support high potential entrepreneurs in various sectors through leadership mentoring networks, formalization support, access to capital and development of sustainable business services such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resource management.
II. Program Description:
TechnoServe seeks Team Leader/General Manager for the anticipated multi-year, DFID-funded private sector development programme based in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. This programme aims to generate employment and increase incomes by facilitating transformation of the export-oriented industries. TechnoServe is seeking candidates with experience in leading teams, designing and implementing private sector development programmes, value chain development, familiarity with Making Markets work for Poor (M4P) methodology, experience in Africa and demonstrate commitment to achieving long-term transformation in people’s lives, especially the very poor.
III. Position Description:
The Team Leader/General Manager’s responsibilities include:
• Manage a high profile, multi-component project funded by DFID
• Serve as the project’s key liaison with the donor, government counterparts, project staff and partners
• Manage, facilitate and supervise the work of project personnel and partners in helping to transform fastest growing sectors and help create jobs
• Promote creation of jobs for women and SME growth
• Lead a dynamic in-country team, closely coordinated with Government of Ethiopia
IV. Required Skills & Experience:
• Advanced degree in Economics, Business or Law
• Minimum 10 years of experience working on private sector development projects globally and preferably in Ethiopia or in other African countries. Experience with Making Markets Work for the Poor is preferred.
• Demonstrated Team Leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as operational and strategic management skills
• Experience leading large complex projects and partner organizations within the consortium
• Experience applying the M4P approach to project design and implementation
• Experience in system transformation initiatives and/or systemic approaches to market development and value-chain development
• Working knowledge of DFID and DFID programme management systems is preferred
• Experience addressing gender inequality and promoting women entrepreneurship /employment (desired)
• Strong knowledge of small & medium enterprises (desired)
• Direct private sector experience preferred (desired)
• Strong knowledge of the Ethiopian working environment (desired)
