Job Summary
The person appointed is required to:
- assist in the conceptualisation, research and events management for the commemoration of World Human Rights Day. Also ensure that all post-event matters are finalised.
- assist in the research and preparation of opinions and advisories on specific human rights thematic or country issues.
- assist with drafting correspondence, arranging meetings and preparing meeting notes/records.
- assist in logistical and administrative arrangements for capacity development interventions.
- report to the Head of Human Rights.
- perform other tasks as delegated by the Head of Human Rights.
Qualifications and Work Experience
To succeed in this role, you will:
- Be a national a Commonwealth country and hold any required visa or permit to work in the United Kingdom.
- Be currently studying for or have recently completed - within the last 12 months - a degree in a relevant field such as human rights, law, social policy or development studies.
- Be fluent in spoken and written English.
- Be able to work in a multicultural work environment and build professional and collegial working relationships with colleagues.
- Be prepared to work in a small team with resource limitations.
- Have a good understanding of human rights within the Commonwealth.
- Have proven research and event management capabilities.
Terms and Conditions of Engagement
- This is a temporary position for 6 months only.
- The intern shall be paid the amount of £250 per week gross.
- The Secretariat assumes no responsibility for ensuring the intern is able to legally work and remain in the United Kingdom during the period of engagement.
About the Human Rights Unit
The Human Rights Unit promotes understanding of, respect for and the promotion and protection of human rights across the Commonwealth, in accordance with principles enshrined in Commonwealth Declarations, international treaties and frameworks. It encourages member countries to adopt and implement international human rights standards, improve and strengthen national human rights infrastructures and build capacity for improved engagement and best practices.
The Human Rights Unit derives its mandate from Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) Declarations. The Commonwealth Secretariat has strategic goals that include strengthening democracy, promoting rights-based development and respect for human rights within the Commonwealth. The Unit also takes a lead in facilitating the shaping of rights-based approaches to development within the Secretariat.
