Organizational Setting
The Forest Assessment, Management and Conservation Division provides services to member countries on matters relating to the forest assessment, development, management, conservation, restoration and protection of forests, trees, water, mountains, biodiversity, wildlife and related natural resources as well as for providing a neutral forum for the discussion of such topics. Other topics of interest for the Division are agroforestry, urban forestry, and forests and climate change, including Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). The post is located in Nairobi, Kenya, as decentralized Officer of the FOM division and part of the FAO team of the United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD).
Reporting Lines
The Forestry Officer reports to the FAO UN-REDD Team Leader, FOM in close collaboration with the UN-REDD regional advisor for Africa, and under the overall guidance of the Director, FOM.
Technical Focus
The Forest Officer will provide technical and policy expertise to support the planning, financing, development and implementation of the team's activities in the Africa Region..
Key Results
Research, technical analysis, and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products, and servi ces.
Key Functions
  • provide technical support to UN-REDD countries in the region as well as FAO country offices, particularly on issues related to National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMS)), Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV);
  • provide technical backstopping and ensure the quality / effectiveness of capacity development and knowledge sharing activities, organizational development and individual learning events in collaboration with the thematic areas colleagues ;
  • develop technical analysis, assessment, monitoring and reporting frameworks, and related methodologies, tools, systems to support the planning, implementation/delivery and monitoring of the UN-REDD FAO activities and services;
  • create synergies between the UN-REDD activities and other relevant initiatives undertaken by FAO in the region,;
  • coordinate and collaborate with UNDP and UNEP regional teams to support the UN-REDD National Programmes and targeted support activities, as well as with other REDD+ actors such as the World Bank's Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, COMIFAC and others at regional and national levels for the implementation of REDD+ activities by FAO;
  • support the monitoring of FAO's REDD+ activities at regional level in Africa, including identification of problems and issues to be addressed during the implementation of activities and suggest corrective actions;
  • perform other duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced university degree in Forestry, Environmental Sciences or related fields;
  • Five years of relevant experience in the field of forest resources monitoring and assessment or forest management, which includes international experience, preferably in developing countries and with international organizations;
  • Working knowledge of English and French.

Technical/Functional Skills
  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable
  • Extent and relevance of experience in delivering capacity building, project implementation, coordination, planning, monitoring and reporting in the field of forestry
  • Extend and relevance of experience in forest resources monitoring and greenhouse gas inventories in the forest sector and on the REDD+ agenda under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), its negotiations, challenges and opportunities
  • Good knowledge of the principles and practises of Monitoring and MRV systems for REDD+ under development by the UN-REDD Programme
  • Extent and relevance of experience leading project and teams is considered a strong asset
  • Ability to regularly travel in various countries of the Africa region
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing, particularly in French
