Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is one of Africa's most eminent health research organizations. With a history of more than 50 years, IHI is an independent, non-profit organization, registered in Tanzania and led by Tanzanians. IHI conducts a wide range of health-related research, including biomedical and environmental studies, trials of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics, health-systems research, and monitoring and evaluation.
1. DATA MANAGER/STATISTICIAN-1 POST
REPORTS TO: PROJECT LEADER.
LOCATION: IFAKARA
Summary of the position
S/he will facilitate the running of the development and use of quality data for research on HIV-infected individuals enrolled in the observational Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO). S/he will collaborate with local data management staff and clinicians working in the Chronic Diseases Clinic in Ifakara (CDCI). He/she will be supervised by the statistician for KIULARCO in Switzerland and the head of the CDCI.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with local data management staff at the CDCI and lead statistician to ensure the quality of the medical records and research database. This involves developing systematic database queries and organizing follow-up on the queries.
Coordinate the compilation and harmonisation of all SOPs to conform the CDCI Operations manual.
Contribute to the ongoing development and operation of the cohort/system’s reporting tools. Develop program files for regular reporting of each section at the CDCI.
Work with the lead statistician to develop codebooks for KIULARCO
Develop analysis datasets for use by researchers
Process various requests for data information and summaries.
Assist with the development of analysis plans and protocols for research under the supervision of the lead statistician.
Contribute to the analysis of research proposals and publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences
Assist with other projects at IHI based on discussions with the project leaders or head of thematic group.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience in data management
Strong statistical programming skills with experience in SAS, Stata or R is required
Strong organizational skills and ability to work efficiently in several parallel projects, delivering results within planned timelines.
Excellent communication skills
A Master level qualification in statistics/mathematics/epidemiology or related field is preferred
Good knowledge of English is required and knowledge of Kiswahili is an advantage
Ability to work independently and interact with interdisciplinary teams. Ability to communicate statistical methods and results to non-statisticians is desired.
