There is a global imperative to further develop the Web, and to fix this inequality. The Web was developed to serve humanity as a whole. Those not benefiting from the Web risk being left behind. The Web is a platform to enhance economic opportunities and democracy in both the developed and the developing world. It improves access to social services including health and education. The Web facilitates political communication and citizen participation. Most poignantly – as vital government services move to the Web, governments do not fulfil their basic responsibility to their populace unless we enable the Web for all. While much has been accomplished through the Web to date, there is still much to be done for the Web to optimally serve humanity.
Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Web, founded the World Wide Web Foundation in 2009 to lead a global movement to reinforce the right of Web access for all and accelerate the ability of all individuals and communities to utilise the Web and unlock the full potential of its economic, social and political impact.
Driven by urgent global needs, the Foundation is now looking to appoint a dynamic Chief Executive Officer. This visionary and strategic leader will help the Foundation leverage its unique understanding of the Web and its global network of expert collaborators to increase the Web’s impact across the world.
The Chief Executive Officer will bring passion and conviction about the opportunity to accelerate Web usage and an understanding of the international development architecture and its funding mechanisms. Their strategic clarity will be coupled with excellent communications to inspire and mobilise partnerships across geographies and sectors. Joining a highly motivated Board and Foundation Team, the Chief Executive will exercise innovative and visionary leadership to realise a future where the Web is available to all and its utility maximised to make a step change in the wellbeing of individuals, families and their broader communities.
