The Invasive Alien Species Coordinator(IASC)is primarily responsible for leading a team to reduce the impact of invasive alien species to the concession lands managed by the Grumeti Fund. This position is based within the Department of Ecological Management (DEM), and reports to the Manager of this Department. This position must work closely in collaboration with the Grumeti Fund’s other two departments –Community Outreach and Research and Monitoring – and with relevant Singita Grumeti departments. This position is also responsible for liaison with local partners including the Ikorongo and Grumeti Game Reserves (IGGR) of the Wildlife Division, Serengeti National Park (SENAPA), the Ikona Wildlife Management Area (Ikona WMA), and the Serengeti and Bunda District authorities of the Mara Region.
The Purpose
The purpose of the IASC and his/her team is to work with others to achieve two overall goals 1) reducing the threats and 2) reducing the impacts of invasive alien species on this ecosystem. To effectively achieve these broad goals, the IASC must work both within and outside the concession boundaries, and build stronger partnerships, collaboration, and capacity to address this major challenge with the people and the natural resources in this region. The primary responsibility on a day-to-day basis is to lead thework of the Alien Invasive Team. To accomplish this responsibility, the IASC must collaborate and coordinate efforts with other departments within the Fund and with key stakeholders.
The Scope of the position
The Invasive Alien Species (IAS) Coordinator ensures the following outcomes are delivered;
i. Be responsible forall planning (strategic and annual) and budgeting of IAS team activities in the department;
ii. Ensure effective management of the IAS team;
iii. Coordinate all inter- and intra-department related activities;
iv. Develop and execute a systematic monitoring, evaluation, reporting and learning (MER&L) plan for IAS team and its activities in conjunction with the Research and Monitoring Department; .
v. Undertake all procurement of materials required by the IAS team;
vi. Conduct and/or coordinate the necessary training of Grumeti Fund staff in the identification and appropriate management of IAS on the concessions;
vii. Collaborate with Singita Grumeti Reserves staff on the effective management of IAS on the concession;
viii. Follow-up and report on a monthly basis to the DEM Manager the effective and sustainable implementation of all IAS activities;
ix. Be a focal and resource person within the department on all IAS related matters;
x. Liaise with the Bunda and Serengeti District authorities with respect to proper management and achievement of IAS team goals and objectives;
xi. Overall coordination and collaboration with local communities and district authorities to increase the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of these partners in combating the IAS threat and its impacts to natural resources and human livelihoods;
xii. Ensure that the IAS team portfolio of work is understood and supported by key protected area partners, particularly IGGR, SENAPA, and the Ikona WMA;
xiii. Other relevant activities as requested by supervisor.
The Profile of the position holder
The person filling this position requires:
• A minimum of a diploma in natural resources management, biology, ecology, or other relevant discipline;
• Not less than three years of relevant working experience in natural resources management;
• Project management skills including, project planning, execution, monitoring and evaluation;
• Experience supervising individuals, with a strong preference to experience leading a team;
• Fluent in both English and Kiswahili and ability and willingness to work with rural communities in their own rural environment.
• Computer literate specifically in the use of Microsoft products (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint);
• Proven communication skills, i.e. oral communication, report writing and presentation skills;
• Experience and or willingness to live and work in remote rural areas;
• A valid vehicle driving license.
