Our client Financial Sector Deepening Trust (FSDT) is a Trust funded by five international development partners; DANIDA, DFTAD-Canada, DFID, SIDA, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). FSDT’s aims to further develop the country’s financial system to provide greater access to financial services to more Tanzanian men, women, and enterprises. Incorporated in July 2004, FSD Tanzania’s mission is to generate sustainable improvements in the livelihoods of poor households through reduced vulnerability to shocks as well as increased incomes and employment. FSD Tanzania’s vision is to achieve improved capacity and sustainability of the financial sector in Tanzania by meeting the needs of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) and individuals. The FSDT intends to appoint a Head of Research who will lead a research function aimed at generating knowledge to support the development of inclusive financial markets in Tanzania.Roles & Responsibilities
The Head of Research will report to FSDT Tanzania’s Executive Director and will primarily focus on:•Oversee all of the research related activities of FSDT and ensuring that the research findings are communicated to a broader audience;
•Responsible for collaborating with sub-contracted research agencies;
•Quality assurance of all research and associated deliverables;
•Responsible for technical content and presentation of standards for all research work;
•Support management in managing FSDTs strategic and business plan objectives particularly in remote areas and for women;
•Develop and manage FSDTs qualitative/quantitative research projects from inception to completion which may involve the collaboration/supervision of contracted research agencies;
•Serve as a thought leader in financial inclusion research within Tanzania by bringing relevant information to FSDT colleagues, regulators and the broader market;
•Act as the link between FSDT and the wider research community related to relevant FSDT objectives;
•Collaborate with other thematic heads in terms of developing the research agenda while promoting cross-thematic collaboration;
•Support FSDT’s programmatic effectiveness through monitoring and evaluation;
•Provide support to FSDT partners towards the implementation of research outcomes;
•Manage and build the expertise of other members of the research team; and
•Provide support to the Executive Director, Operations Director and other management staff in the implementation of FSDTs broad strategies and business plans
Requirements
The Head of Research will have the following experience and attributes:•Master’s degree or Post-graduate or higher qualification in Management / Statistics / Economics / Social Sciences from a reputable institution;
•Strong experience with qualitative and quantitative research and analysis techniques and knowledge of their application for market development;
•Ability to quickly analyse, interpret and synthesize an array of primary and secondary data to produce actionable recommendations;
•Previous experience managing fieldwork and adapting methods to challenging and constrained conditions;
•Direct experience managing a team, including line management, and training researchers;
•Direct experience in managing research budgets to the highest standard of financial integrity;
•Strong presentation and report generation skills and a track record of presentations to audiences, including executives or senior government officials; and
•Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills: ability to conduct business at all levels from grassroots to the highest levels of governments as well as within the financial sector
Additional Information
Travel within Tanzania and other Sub-Saharan African countries will be required with occasional international travel as required. This role will be a three year contract, subject to performance. The contract may be renewed by mutual agreement.
